Fresher hiring in India isn’t spreading evenly, it’s clustering. According to the TeamLease EdTech Career Outlook Report HY1, fresher hiring intent varies sharply by city, from as high as 84% to under 10%, and each leading city has quietly built its own hiring identity, hiring for very different roles rather than simply hiring more of the same.
Here are the five cities driving the boom, and what they’re actually hiring for.
1. Bangalore (84% hiring intent) India’s largest fresher hiring hub isn’t just hiring more, it’s hiring more specifically. Bangalore leads demand for Software Testing Engineers (54%) and Cloud Operations Associates (46%), alongside Vendor Coordination Executives in Engineering & Infrastructure and Digital Sales roles in e-commerce. The city’s fresher hiring intent has also climbed from 81% in the previous half-year, reinforcing its position as the country’s most consistent entry-level hiring engine.
2. Mumbai (72% hiring intent) Mumbai’s fresher hiring story is increasingly about commerce, not just finance. The city shows the highest demand nationally for Digital Sales Associates (58%) in e-commerce and Jr. Field Service Engineers (44%) in Power & Energy, alongside BIM Coordination Assistants in Construction & Real Estate. Hiring intent here has risen from 67% to 72%, one of the sharper city-level gains in this cycle.
3. Chennai (63% hiring intent) Chennai has emerged as a manufacturing and infrastructure-first hiring city. It records the country’s highest demand for Inventory & Logistics Coordinators (58%) and Network Infrastructure Technicians (57%), alongside strong hiring for Market Research Associates in the startup ecosystem. That’s a distinctly different hiring mix from the IT-heavy patterns of Bangalore and Hyderabad.
4. Hyderabad (57% hiring intent) Hyderabad’s fresher demand skews toward retail and pharma-adjacent operations. The city leads hiring for Dark Store Assistants (63%) in Retail and shows strong demand for Digital Campaign Analysts (47%) in Manufacturing’s marketing functions, alongside Jr. Application Developers in Agri-Tech. Its hiring intent has grown from 54% to 57% over the previous half-year.
5. Delhi (46% hiring intent) Delhi’s fresher hiring is anchored in tech infrastructure roles rather than consumer-facing ones. The city shows the highest demand for Jr. Web Developers (55%) among e-commerce start-ups and Cloud Operations Associates (52%) in IT, alongside Supply Chain Executives in FMCG. Notably, Delhi’s intent dipped slightly from 48% to 46%, one of the few large cities to see a marginal pullback this cycle.
The pattern behind the map What the numbers reveal is that India’s fresher hiring geography is specialising, not just scaling. Bangalore anchors testing and cloud roles, Mumbai leans into digital sales and field engineering, Chennai is building out logistics and network infrastructure talent, Hyderabad is retail and campaign-analytics heavy, and Delhi remains tech-infrastructure led. For freshers, that means the smarter job search increasingly starts with matching the role to the city’s specific hiring identity, not just its overall hiring intent.
