GUWAHATI: Finally, the police in Morigaon arrested the prime accused in the horrific rape and murder a 9-year-old girl from Balidonga in Laharighat under Morigaon district on Saturday night.
The 65-65 old was Syed Ali (65) has been absconding to evade the arrest since the day of the incident on June 20.
A former ‘Imam’ (priest) of a mosque, Syed Ali has been accused of committing such heinous acts before.
“The imam has raped the minor girl after killing her at the jute field at Balidunga under Bhuragaon police station on June 20,” Morigaon superintendent of police Aparna Natarajan told repeorters here.
He has been ben working in a Madrassa school.
A case No 112/21 has been registered in Morigaon Sadar police station under section 376 of IPC, the SP said.
The body of the girl was found in a jute field in Balidunga village, near the Brahmaputra on June 20.
The imam was on the run since the day the crime was committed.
One or two more persons are suspected to have been involved.
The Morigaon police conducted a swift operation and on Saturday managed to arrest the notorious culprit.
The incident has prompted chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to visit Bhuragaon on June 25 to take stock of the progress in investigation.
During his meeting with the girl’s parents, the chief minister, who also holds the home portfolio, had assured of speedy justice.
