Mumbai : On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Apex Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, urged citizens to quit tobacco and recognize the early warning signs of oral cancer, emphasizing that prevention and early diagnosis remain the most effective tools in the fight against cancer.
According to experts from the Department of Oncology at Apex Group of Hospitals, oral cancer continues to be among the most common cancers in India, particularly among individuals with a history of tobacco chewing, gutkha consumption, smoking, and other tobacco-related habits. Despite growing awareness, a significant number of patients continue to seek medical care only after the disease has progressed to an advanced stage.
Sharing a recent clinical experience, experts from the Department of Oncology recalled the case of a 42-year-old father of two who developed oral cancer after nearly two decades of tobacco chewing. What initially appeared to be a minor mouth ulcer gradually progressed into a serious cancerous condition requiring advanced surgical intervention and comprehensive cancer treatment.
“Behind every cancer diagnosis is a patient and a family whose lives change forever. While medical science continues to advance, it is unfortunate that many tobacco-related cancers remain entirely preventable. We are increasingly witnessing younger individuals presenting with advanced oral cancers because early symptoms are often ignored or underestimated,” said experts from the Department of Oncology, Apex Group of Hospitals.
The patient underwent successful oral cancer surgery followed by comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation. Today, he remains cancer-free and has adopted a tobacco-free lifestyle, encouraging others in his family and community to avoid tobacco consumption.
Experts highlighted that oral cancer often develops gradually and presents with early warning signs that should never be ignored. These include persistent mouth ulcers that do not heal, white or red patches inside the mouth, restricted mouth opening, difficulty in swallowing, unexplained bleeding from oral lesions, persistent burning sensation, loose teeth without an apparent cause, and swelling in the neck.
“Many patients wait for severe pain or significant symptoms before seeking medical attention. Early detection can dramatically improve treatment outcomes and survival rates. Any oral symptom that persists for more than two weeks should be evaluated by a specialist without delay,” the experts added.
The Department of Oncology at Apex Group of Hospitals provides comprehensive cancer care services, including cancer screening, advanced cancer surgery, chemotherapy, multidisciplinary cancer management, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up care. The team routinely manages complex cancer cases across various specialties with a patient-centric and evidence-based approach.
On World No Tobacco Day, Apex Group of Hospitals appeals to the public to quit tobacco in all its forms, undergo regular health screenings, and seek timely medical evaluation for any suspicious symptoms.
“The most effective way to fight tobacco-related cancer is to prevent it before it starts. Choosing to quit tobacco today can help save lives tomorrow,” concluded experts from the Department of Oncology, Apex Group of Hospitals.
