DELHI TO HAVE Rs 1400 CRORE INTEGRATED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (ITMS) FOR FASTER VEHICULAR MOVEMENT BY END OF NEXT YEAR 2024

To reduce congestion and facilitate faster and smarter  vehicular movement by the end of next year 2024  Delhi will have an Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS). The detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Rs 1400 crore project is ready for implementation and survey of various  intersections in the city has been done. This action puts the project, which was rolled out over a decade ago, on the final stretch.

“ A study is being carried out to ascertain the traffic volume, average speed on the road, number of pedestrians using the road, stoppage time and average travel time taken to cross the junction. The survey will also include the geographic information systems to predict likely traffic movement in real time depending on the area and topography in the national capital” said Mr Surender Singh Yadav, Special commissioner\, Delhi Traffic Police while inaugurating a road safety conference’ ‘Responsible behavior & Smart mobility’ organised by apex trade body ASSOCHAM  here today.

“ITMS is a technology that employs artificial intelligence to assess traffic in real time. When implemented it is likely to change the traffic scenario in the city. Real time traffic information will be passed to commuters. The human interface in road management will be reduced and traffic signals will operate automatically during the day depending on traffic volume and average speed on the road.” Mr Yadav said .

“As part of ITMS, high resolution video cameras will be installed for a traffic pattern analysis. Once the detailed project report is readied, it will take around six months for the system’s implementation and traffic police hope to see the changes on the ground by next year. Installation of ITMS will  help in smooth electronic challaning of traffic  violators thus sparing traffic police personnel for better regulating of traffic in the city” Said Mr Yadav.

“Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) which works on machine learning and artificial intelligence and can facilitate a quick passage to emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire tenders. The project aims to synchronise all the traffic signals and automatically regulate the signal light. The Integrated Traffic Management System will also caution motorists on diversions to be taken in case of any congestion ahead “ the  officials said.

“Delhi has about 1.4 crore traffic challans pending, each month only red light jumping has 3,5 lakh challans  in the capital. We are in touch with insurance companies to including pending traffic violation challans in the vehicle insurance police at the time of renewal each year’ Mr Yadav ,

“India accounts for more than 11 per cent of total global road accidents and is signatory to UN declaration to reduce 50% road accidents by the year 2030 Union Ministry of road transport and highways has reduced the target to the year 2025 . International Road Federation (IRF) as part of its effort to reduce road accident deaths is focusing on E’s of road safety including Engineering, Vehicle Engineering , Education, enforcement and Emergency care “ said  Mr K K Kapila, President Emeritus, International Road Federation (IRF) while speaking at the seminar.

“There has been tremendous development and continued growth in the expansion of road networks and evolution of transport in the country. It has become increasingly important to find solutions and set new policies and strategies to overcome traffic related issues through Smart Traffic management, Road Safety initiatives and Accident Prevention measures. The corrective measures under  Five E’s of road safety will help in reducing fatal accidents in the country in a bigway ” Said Mr Kapila.

Others who spoke at the seminar included Mr Vinod Pandey, Chairperson, ASSOCHAM , National council and director CSR, BMW India, Mr Nitin Pawar, GM, Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India and  Mr Jyoti Malhotra ,MD , Volvo Car India
