Pune : Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, inaugurated the ‘Yashraj Prasad Patil’ Multi-Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to advancing specialised transplant care and making complex medical treatment more accessible to patients across Maharashtra and beyond.
The Centre builds on DPU’s established expertise in complex organ transplantation, supported by specialised multidisciplinary teams, advanced medical technology and a dedicated clinical environment designed to meet the demanding requirements of transplant patients.
A key feature of the new Centre is its purpose-built, standalone transplant infrastructure facility with dedicated air-handling systems and specialised infection-control measures. Recognising that hospitals can be reservoirs of infection and that infection prevention is particularly critical for transplant recipients, the facility has been designed to provide a controlled clinical environment for patients undergoing transplantation and those recovering after surgery.
DPU’s transplant programme has recorded 562 transplants across multiple organ categories so far, reflecting its growing capabilities in complex transplantation. Building on its legacy of advanced transplant care, the centre has recorded significant achievements across multiple transplant specialties over the years. These include 261 kidney transplants, 100 liver transplants, 45 lung transplants, alongside complex procedures such as simultaneous kidney–pancreas, liver–kidney and heart–kidney transplants, as well as heart and combined heart–lung transplants. The new Centre is designed to build on this experience, expand its capacity and strengthen its position as a specialised transplant destination in the coming years.
The Centre’s development reflects DPU’s approach of combining advanced infrastructure with specialised clinical expertise. Rather than attempting to build expertise in isolation, the institution has sought collaboration with experienced professionals and established transplant specialists, bringing their knowledge and skills closer to patients in Pune.
This model of collaboration, supported by modern infrastructure and a strong clinical team, has helped the transplant programme evolve over time. The Centre is expected to expand its capabilities and volume of procedures in the coming years, with the long-term vision of developing into a Centre of Excellence for Advanced Transplantation in India.
The facility integrates state-of-the-art medical technology, advanced equipment and a carefully designed clinical environment to support the complex needs of transplant recipients particularly those with end-stage heart and lung disease ,severe respiratory conditions and other complex illnesses that may require advanced transplant and critical care. Many of these patients have severely damaged organs and require highly coordinated, specialised treatment.
With more than 50 heart and lung transplants performed over the last three years, DPU has built substantial experience in advanced cardiopulmonary transplant care. The new Centre will further strengthen this specialised clinical programme, with a focus on patients requiring complex, high-dependency care before and after transplantation.
Advancing Accessible and Affordable Transplant Care
A central part of DPU’s vision is to make advanced transplant care more accessible and affordable to patients who require life-saving treatment. Organ failure remains a significant healthcare challenge, and patients with end-stage heart and lung disease may require highly specialised interventions that are not readily available in every healthcare setting.
The Centre aims to address this need by bringing advanced transplant services, specialised expertise and comprehensive critical care together under one roof. Its integrated model is intended to reduce the need for patients to travel between institutions for complex treatment and support continuity of care throughout the transplant journey.
The initiative also reflects the institution’s commitment to developing specialised healthcare infrastructure with a focus on patient outcomes and long-term institutional capability, rather than treating the expansion of transplant services solely as a commercial endeavour.
Building the Next Generation of Transplant Specialists
The Centre is also expected to play an important role in medical education and training. By providing medical students, postgraduate trainees and young clinicians with exposure to advanced transplant procedures, specialised critical care and multidisciplinary clinical decision-making, it will help strengthen the next generation of healthcare professionals.
This exposure is expected to contribute to the development of skilled transplant specialists and support knowledge-sharing with other institutions seeking to establish or strengthen their own transplant programmes.
Through its combination of advanced infrastructure, collaborative expertise, clinical experience and academic engagement, the ‘Yashraj Prasad Patil’ Multi-Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence aims to contribute to the wider development of transplant medicine in Maharashtra and across the country.
Dr. P.D. Patil, Chancellor, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pimpri, Pune, said, “Our vision has always been to build an institution that combines advanced medical infrastructure with a commitment to accessible and affordable healthcare. The ‘Yashraj Prasad Patil’ Multi-Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence is a reflection of this vision. Organ transplantation requires not only state-of-the-art technology but also specialised expertise, teamwork and a deep commitment to patient care. Through this Centre, we hope to expand access to complex transplant procedures, create opportunities for the next generation of medical professionals to learn from advanced clinical practices, and contribute to the development of transplant capabilities across the country.”
Dr. Bhagyashree P. Patil, Pro-Chancellor, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pimpri, Pune, said, “The inauguration of the ‘Yashraj Prasad Patil’ Multi-Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence is an important milestone in our commitment to making advanced and specialised healthcare accessible and affordable. With this Centre, we are bringing together advanced infrastructure, specialised clinical expertise and a dedicated team to support patients with complex organ failure. Dr. Yashraj Patil, Trustee & Treasurer, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pimpri, Pune, said, “The Centre has been designed to address the unique and complex needs of patients requiring organ transplantation, particularly those with end-stage heart and lung disease.
