Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi passes away at 86

GUWAHATI : Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi passed away on Monday. He was 86 years old. Talking to media, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the former CM passed away at around 5:34 pm. Let’s say his situation was already going on. That is why the state Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal returned to Guwahati to visit Dibrugarh in his official programme. He is left with his wife, son, daughter, daughter and grandchildren. Gogoi was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on 1st November for the second time after being recovered from Kovid-19. However, their health condition deteriorated with a sudden decline in oxygen saturation levels on August 31. Thereafter, the hospital authorities had given plasma therapy. Assam’s three-time chief minister Tarun Gogoi served the state from 2001 to 2016.

In his five-decade-long political career, he was asked to give him a  P V Narasimha Rao’s government also served the country as union minister from 1991 to 1996. He had given six terms as Member of Parliament (MP) from Kalaibor and Jorhat constituency. After being elected joint secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1976, he became a political leader with national stature. He later served as general secretary of the AICC from 1985 to 1990 under Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. After completing 15 consecutive years as Chief Minister in Assam and serving for the longest time, his political career culminated in a prominent position in the state on May 18, 2016. The late veteran congressman started his political career in 1968 when he was appointed as a member of the Jorhat Municipal Board and was elected as a member of Parliament from Jorhat Stability in Assam.
