HIGH TIME FOR IIT’s TO BECOME BORDERLESS MEGA CAMPUS IN THIS AGE OF FAST MOVING TECHNOLOGY : IITKGP Director   Prof Suman Chakraborty

New Delhi : In this age where technology is moving faster than ever. Artificial intelligence, automation, and digital tools are reshaping the way we work, it is high time for IIT’s to become borderless mega campuses  breaking  traditional geographic and academic silos by enabling remote learning, fostering global research collaborations, and offering new, interdisciplinary courses in high-demand fields.

“It is high time to  reimagine the IIT campuses from  outdated 1G to 4G as the world does not need more technocrats, It needs humans who can think and feel — who can use algorithms, but are not ruled by them. The future belongs to those who can combine emotional intelligence with technical intelligence. Earlier  technocrats relied on extensive research and skill-learning, whereas in the current day scenario, AI systems like ChatGPT can generate answers to most science and tech questions.” Said Dr Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur while speaking at an event Celebration of 75th Foundation Day of IIT KGP  organised by Technology Alumni Association (TAA) Delhi chapter of the institute.

“IIT KGP is pushing boundaries with research across cybersecurity, AI, cloud computing, and disease modelling. He added that the AI models designed by the institute are being used for disaster response and precision agriculture. The institute is working on its shortcomings to make itself a more preferred choice for nationwide talent. “We are good at classroom teaching, but beyond that, we are working on improving infrastructure, improving quality of life, and making campus life more vibrant.” Dr Chakraborty said.

“We’re living in a time. Jobs that once seemed “safe” are now at risk, and the traditional route to success- education- job- retirement- doesn’t quite fit anymore. It’s time we asked ourselves: Is just getting a job the only goal? Or can we aim for something more? A new mindset: Create, don’t just compete. We need to spread that mindset wider. Across cities, villages, classrooms, and boardrooms. Because the future belongs to those who can create, not just those who can compete.” He said.

He urged the IIT Alumni to do away with the traditional notion of giving back and changing the definition of success  instead they  should fund students for start-ups and innovations.

Those present on the occasion included Chakresh Jain, President,TAA Delhi Chapter,

Prof Prem Vrat, Former Director IIT Roorkee, Prof Damodar Acharya Former Director IIT Kharagpur, Mr Satish Mehta, IIT Alumni Council Member Mr Prashant Singh,

Prashant Singh – G. Sec. TAA Delhi Chapter, Mr Yatinder Pal Singh Suri, Eminent and Mr Yogesh Bhatia eminent Alumni of IITKGP.

A start-up exhibition by Alumni was a major highlight of the event.
