Kolkata: When 78-year-old Pankaj Chakraborty was brought under the care of Health Plus Home Healthcare, his condition was extremely critical with advanced cancer requiring intensive supportive care at home.
At the time Health Plus first assessed him, Mr. Chakraborty was completely bedridden and dependent on round-the-clock care. He was receiving around 3 litres of supplemental oxygen, had a nasogastric feeding tube and a Foley urinary catheter, and his Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score was poor, reflecting his serious clinical condition.
Understanding the level of care he required, the Health Plus team visited his home and set up a complete home-care support system. Hospital bed, oxygen support and cardiac monitoring equipment were arranged, along with a 24-hour critical-care nurse to monitor him and assist with his daily medical needs.
But the focus of his care went beyond simply keeping him medically stable.
As his condition gradually improved, the Health Plus team began encouraging and supporting him to become more active. With regular assisted exercises, mobilisation and walking practice, he slowly began regaining strength and confidence.
The change over time has been significant. From being completely bedridden, Mr. Chakraborty is now able to sit up, eat on his own and walk with assistance. He can also go to the toilet with support, something he was unable to do when Health Plus first began caring for him.
The care team continues to work with him at home, helping him with exercises, walking, getting to the toilet and other everyday activities. The aim has been to help him regain as much mobility and independence as his condition allows, while keeping him comfortable and safe in the familiar surroundings of his home.
For his family, the difference has been deeply encouraging. What began as a situation in which he was completely dependent on others for even his basic needs has gradually changed into one where he can once again take part in many aspects of his everyday life.
“For us, healthcare is not only about managing a critical condition. It is also about helping a person regain their strength, dignity and ability to do things for themselves, however small those steps may be.”
— Mr. Debashis Roy, Founder & CEO, Health Plus Home Healthcare
