Bengaluru: Hosachiguru, a Bengaluru-based sustainable agroforestry company, partnered with BlueDot and Plastic Fischer for Plogathon, a community-led cleanup initiative held at Madiwala Lake in Bengaluru on September, bringing together around 700 volunteers to participate in the cleanup drive.
The initiative witnessed strong participation from Bengaluru’s young citizens, corporate teams, colleges and students, who came together to contribute to the cleanup of the lake surroundings. Volunteers collectively removed approximately 1.6 tonnes of waste, comprising different forms of plastic and legacy waste.
The initiative brought together participation from citizens as well as representatives from the civic and corporate ecosystem. Ms. Sowmya Reddy, former MLA and President of the Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress; Mr. Maheshwar Rao M., IAS, Chief Commissioner, Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA); and Mr. Sriram Chitlur, Managing Director, Hosachiguru, were among those present at the initiative.
Speaking about Hosachiguru’s association with the initiative, Mr. Srinath Setty, CEO & Co-founder, Hosachiguru, said, “Clean and healthy urban ecosystems are a shared responsibility, and meaningful change begins when communities come together to take action. The Plogathon at Madiwala Lake brought together citizens, students, corporate teams and volunteers around a common purpose, demonstrating what collective participation can achieve. Initiatives like these are important in building greater awareness around waste management and encouraging people to take ownership of the spaces they share. It is encouraging to see such diverse participation coming together to create a tangible impact for the city.”
The strong turnout, particularly from young participants, students and corporate teams, highlighted the growing community participation in initiatives focused on addressing local environmental concerns. The collaboration also brought together multiple stakeholders with a shared objective of encouraging greater citizen participation in keeping Bengaluru’s public spaces cleaner.
The cleanup was followed by a community music programme organised by UnboxingBLR, providing participants with an opportunity to come together and engage through music after the plogathon. The programme featured performances by Rayara Kudure Katte, Nithin M Kamath, Vasu Dixit and Alva Kuuto.
The collaboration between Hosachiguru, BlueDot and Plastic Fischer reflects the role that partnerships between businesses, community organisations and citizens can play in creating greater awareness and participation around local environmental initiatives.
