Internet in India is always open, safe and trusted and accountable for Indians:  Union Minister

New Delhi: Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the government is committed to policies and actions that ensure that Internet in India is always open, safe and trusted and accountable for all Indians.

Replying to questions in the Lok Sabha, the Minister said, with the expansion of internet and more and more Indians coming online, the incidents of cyber crimes including crimes against children online is also increasing.

He said, the challenges of cyber space are many which flow from its vastness and borderless character. Mr Vaishnaw said, as per data published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 306 cases of cybercrime against children were registered during 2019 and 1,102 such cases in 2020.

The Minister informed the house that to strengthen the mechanism to deal with cybercrimes including crimes against children in a comprehensive and coordinated manner, the Central Government has taken measuers in consultations with various stakeholders.

Mr Vaishnaw said, government periodically blocks the websites containing extreme child sexual abuse material  based on INTERPOL’s worst of list received through the Central Bureau of Investigation.
