Karma Foundation, a Pune-based charitable trust providing veterinary care for animals in need, is steadily contributing to the advancement of animal welfare in India through structured medical care, rescue initiatives, and preventive healthcare programmes for stray and community animals. Founded in January 2018, the organisation was established with the objective of providing ethical, accessible, and advanced veterinary treatment to animals in need.
At the heart of Karma Foundation’s work is its 14,000 sq. ft. animal healthcare facility in Pune, designed to operate on the lines of a human hospital. The centre is equipped with an in-house pathology laboratory, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), operation theatre, recovery wards, and an outpatient department. With the capacity to offer inpatient care to up to 150 animals and outpatient services to approximately 300 animals per month, the facility enables timely and comprehensive medical intervention.
Karma Foundation’s services span emergency trauma care, diagnostics, surgeries, sterilisation, vaccinations, and post-treatment rehabilitation. Alongside life-saving treatment, the organisation places strong emphasis on preventive healthcare, particularly vaccination and sterilisation, to address long-term challenges such as disease control and population management.
Since its inception, Karma Foundation has recorded significant on-ground impact, with over 21,000 animals saved, more than 24,000 sterilisations conducted, over 46,000 vaccinations administered, and upwards of 12,000 surgeries performed. Thousands of animals have also received treatment through its community clinic initiatives.
Commenting on the journey, Ms. Priya Kailad, Founder and President, Karma Foundation, said,“When we started Karma Foundation, the aim was simple — to ensure that no animal suffers due to lack of timely medical care. Over the years, we have seen how structured healthcare, combined with preventive measures like sterilisation and vaccination, can create real and lasting change. Our focus remains on strengthening this ecosystem and making quality veterinary care accessible to animals that need it the most.”
The foundation is supported by a team of over 40 professionals, including full-time veterinarians, surgeons, trained caregivers, and visiting specialists, who work together to deliver consistent care and emergency response.
With a mission to make Pune a rabies-free city, Karma Foundation is also focused on expanding its outreach into rural India by setting up smaller units aimed at education, awareness, and basic animal healthcare. Through sustained efforts, the organisation continues to work towards building a more humane, organised, and sustainable animal welfare ecosystem in India.
