Mumbai: KARO, a leading public charitable trust dedicated to supporting cancer patients, proudly inaugurated their second accommodation home in Kurla. The Shapoorji Pallonji Group has played a vital role by providing financial support to the KARO Home Kurla project, emphasizing their commitment to social responsibility.
Catering specifically to male teenage and young adult patients from lower-income backgrounds, the facility offers free-of-cost living, thus alleviating the burden of housing expenses in Mumbai during their treatment. This marks a pivotal stride in their mission to provide holistic aid and assistance to cancer patients from marginalized backgrounds.
KARO Home Kurla was inaugurated yesterday by Dr Rajendra Badwe, Director of Tata Memorial Center. He said “Providing accommodation homes for cancer patients is a significant necessity. Hospitals cover 50 per cent of what needs to be delivered in terms of patients treatment and the balance 50.per cent is covered in homes like KARO HOME where comfort is given to the patient and the caregivers. The most important aspect is creating the comfort of being at home. I observed this happening at KARO Home. In conclusion, I would like to express that I would even consider staying at KARO HOME.”
Recognizing the dire need for dignified housing among patients who come to Mumbai for treatment, KARO Trust initiated its first accommodation centre for female patients, KARO Home Sion, in 2019 to ensure that no one is compelled to live on the streets or abandon their treatment due to inadequate lodging facilities.
“At KARO, our vision is to provide comprehensive support to cancer patients, addressing financial, medical, emotional, and logistical challenges,” said Mrs. Uma Malhotra, Managing Trustee of KARO. “The launch of KARO Home in Kurla helps bridge the gap in accommodation for teenage and young adult cancer patients from underprivileged backgrounds, ensuring they receive the care and support they deserve.”

KARO Home Kurla has 21 available beds—each room accommodates two caregivers along with the patient and includes a fully functional kitchen plus essential rations for residents to prepare home-cooked meals. The Home also has an expansive terrace and recreational area to foster a sense of community. Committed to a clean, safe, and hygienic living space, the Home offers various counselling and therapy sessions, contributing to the patients’ overall well-being. Sessions include arts and crafts, music, dance, and personal one-on-one counselling. Patients are also offered free transportation to and from the hospitals to ensure no appointments or treatments are missed.
Since 2015, KARO has financially supported treatment for over 5000 cancer patients and successfully housed over 300 families through their first KARO Home in Sion. Karo has worked with more than 70 Hospitals and raised over 40 crores in the last 8 years for cancer treatments for children and young adults from lower-income backgrounds across India.
