New Delhi : Max Healthcare, one of India’s largest healthcare organisations, and Surgical Intuitive, a pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery, today announced the introduction of India’s first da Vinci 5 robotic-assisted surgical systems at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi, and Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai. This milestone marks a significant advancement in bringing next-generation robotic-assisted surgical technology to the country.
The introduction of da Vinci 5 further strengthens Max Healthcare’s capabilities in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery. The advanced platform combines Force Feedback technology, enhanced 3D visualisation better ergonomics, guided instrument insertion, improved cautery with smoke evacuation and significantly greater computing power, designed to give surgeons with greater control, precision and awareness during complex surgical procedures. It has unique feature of tele proctoring and mentoring which will avoid Procter to travel different centres for training.
The first procedures using the new platform were performed at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi, and Nanavati-Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai, across multiple specialties, including urology, gynaecology and gastrointestinal surgery.
Dr. Anant Kumar, Chairman – Urology, Renal Transplant and Robotics, Max Saket Complex, performed a prostatectomy and a partial nephrectomy. At Nanavati Max, the procedures were performed by Dr. Jignesh Ashwinbhai Gandhi, Senior Director – Robotic, Gastrointestinal, Minimal Access & General Surgery, and Dr. Uddhavraj Dudhedia, Director and Head – Advanced Robotic Gynaecology.
These procedures involve operating around delicate anatomical structures, where precise instrument control and careful tissue handling are particularly important.
Commenting on the announcement, Dr Sandeep Budhiraja, Group Chairman – Internal Medicine & Group Medical Director, Max Healthcare, said: “At Max Healthcare, we have consistently invested in advanced medical technologies to strengthen our clinical capabilities and improve patient care. Introducing India’s first da Vinci 5 systems at our flagship hospital in Saket and at Nanavati Max Hospital, Mumbai, reflects our commitment to bringing the latest advancements in healthcare to the country. While technology can significantly enhance surgical capabilities, its true value lies in how effectively it complements clinical expertise to improve patient safety, treatment outcomes and recovery. We will continue to invest in innovations that enable our clinicians to deliver high-quality care.”
One of the key advancements of the da Vinci 5 platform is its Force Feedback technology, which enables surgeons to sense the push and pull forces exerted on tissue through the console hand controls. This provides an additional layer of information during surgery, helping surgeons better assess the force being applied while handling delicate tissues.
The da Vinci 5 system also features Intuitive’s most advanced 3D visualisation technology to date, an ergonomic and immersive surgeon console, and 10,000 times the computing power of previous-generation systems.
Dr. Anant Kumar, Chairman – Urology, Renal Transplant and Robotics, Max Saket Complex, said, “The Force Feedback technology and integrated workflows of the da Vinci 5 support more controlled instrument handling and greater awareness during surgery. In procedures such as radical cystectomy with neo bladder reconstruction and partial nephrectomy, this can help surgeons navigate delicate tissue, minimise tissue trauma and preserve critical structures, supporting functional recovery while keeping each patient’s clinical needs at the centre of surgical decisions.”
Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager, India, Intuitive, said, “This is a defining moment for surgical care in India, da Vinci 5 is Intuitive’s most advanced and integrated robotic-assisted surgical system, the culmination of three decades of pioneering innovation. With its introduction at Max Healthcare patients will have the access to the same technology that leading hospitals across the US, Europe, Japan, and Korea rely on today. I congratulate Max Healthcare and its surgeons for leading the way. With enhanced surgical sensing, greater computing power, and data-driven surgical insights, da Vinci 5 lays the foundation for the future of surgery in India, from AI-enabled learning to remote telesurgery. We look forward to partnering with Max Healthcare as it expands patient access to best-in-class care.”
