Odisha Govt requests UGC to extend deadline for undergraduate, PG final year exams

Bhuvaneswar: Odisha Government has requested the University Grants Commission (UGC) to extend the 30th September deadline to conduct final year undergraduate and postgraduate exams by 10 days. The decision to approach the UGC for extension was taken after the Vice Chairmen of Universities and Heads of Autonomous colleges of the state cited difficulties in sticking to the deadline.

Amid the rising covid-19 caseload, the Odisha government has finally agreed to go by the UGC guidelines, with a rider though, to conduct the final year and final semester exams of the UG & PG courses of the higher educational institutions falling under its jurisdiction. It has expressed its inability to conduct such examinations within the stipulated time period while factoring in the covid-19  risk.

The government felt that sticking to the deadline would mean cramming the available exam days with more sittings leading to crowding in the exam centres. The apprehensions that are uppermost for the govt is that the impact of such crowding would cascade down to the examinees and examiners alike as potential viral risk, due to the difficulties in abiding by the pandemic protocols like social distancing and adequate sanitization of the exam venues.
