State BJP woman leader arrested for assaulting police officer in Assam

From Bhupen Goswami

GUWAHATI : A day after the Election Commission of India announced the dates of elections in Assam, Assam Police on Saturday arrested Assam BJP leader Dipanjali Kokoti Moran for attacking a police officer in Tinsukia. Dipakali Kakoti, who allegedly assaulted Kasopathar police station sub-inspector Apurva Das in November last year, was arrested by a police team from his Tinsukia residence. After the incident, the police had registered a case against Kakoti for indecent behaviour, physical assault and preventing a public servant from doing his duty.

However, police failed to arrest him for the past four months. The police could not muster the courage to arrest Dipanjali due to “political pressure of Dispur,” the sources said. In an FIR against Kakoti on November 8, Si Das had alleged that the BJP leader had flaunted “his proximity” to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, threatening to dismiss the officer and “assault” him. The BJP later suspended him for “denigrating the image of the party”. He was the executive member of the State Committee of Saffron Party. However, last month, the Assam government appointed him as a member of the Autonomous Council. As per the report, he has a good relationship with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
