In a vibrant celebration of visual storytelling, the Department of Media Science atThe Heritage Academy observed World Photography Day, on 19th August, marked by a thought-provoking keynote address from the renowned photographer Mr. Satyaki Ghosh, the son of the legendary Late Shri Nemai Ghosh, who was famously associated with cinematic maestro Satyajit Ray.
Mr. Ghosh, who has carved his own niche in contemporary photography, captivated the audience with his deep reflections on the art and spirituality behind the camera. “Photography has a connection with the divine. The photographer gets the signal from the divine which moment is the best for a photograph,” he said, drawing a reverent silence and later thunderous applause from the packed auditorium.
The event featured a curated exhibition of student works from various colleges across the city that featured portrait and landscape photography in various areas . The presence of Mr. Ghosh, with his rich legacy and contemporary insights, added a rare depth to the occasion.
Faculty members, students, and photography enthusiasts came together to honor the transformative power of images and to explore how the lens not only captures moments, but also reveals unseen truths. Around 60 colleges across the city participated in the photography exhibition.
“Bringing Mr. Satyaki Ghosh to speak today was not only a tribute to photography but to a legacy that stretches back to the golden age of Indian cinema,” said Prof. Madhupa Bakshi, Dean, Department of Media Science, The Heritage Academy. The inaugural session was also addressed by Prof. Gour Banerjee, Principal, The Heritage Academy and Prof. Basab Chaudhuri, Principal, Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata.
The celebration concluded with an open Q&A session, where Mr. Ghosh encouraged young photographers to trust their instincts, observe keenly, and “stay humble before the moment.”
