An NCPA Presentation
Varsha Rithu – The Monsoon, presented by Bharatanatyam exponent Indira Kadambi and the Ambalam Ensemble, is a celebration of the season that transforms both the earth and the human spirit. Drawing on the imagery of a parched landscape awaiting rain, the production reflects on the monsoon as a symbol of renewal, fulfilment and abundance. Songs and tears of joy welcome the rains, while themes of love, longing, desire and hope unfold through movement and music. Interwoven with these emotions is the timeless interplay of prakriti and purusha, evoking the cyclical rhythms of life and the interconnectedness of all existence.
Complementing this presentation is Kathopkathan by Kathak artiste Vaidehi Parashurami and troupe, an exploration of the enduring dialogue between Kathak and Indian cinema. Tracing the journey of traditional elements such as tatkaar, ang-shuddhi, abhinaya, chakkars and gat-bhava from the classical stage to the silver screen, the production examines how generations of maestros helped shape a cinematic language rooted in Kathak. Through references to iconic film songs and the contributions of legends including Gopi Krishna, Sitara Devi, Lachhu Maharaj, Kumudini Lakhia and Pandit Birju Maharaj, Kathopkathan highlights the rich artistic exchange between classical dance and popular culture.
The evening brings together two accomplished artistes whose work reflects both a deep engagement with classical tradition and a commitment to expanding its contemporary relevance. A distinguished Bharatanatyam performer and choreographer, Indira Kadambi is a graded artiste of Doordarshan and an empanelled artiste of the ICCR. A recipient of honours including the Natya Shanthala Award and Nrithya Kala Sagara, she is known for her thoughtful choreographic works and nuanced performances. Vaidehi Parashurami has been performing Kathak for over twenty-five years and is a disciple of Asha Joglekar. A recipient of the Pt. Paluskar Award and the Nritya Nipun Award, she has also received guidance from Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj. Alongside her work as a dancer, she has built a distinguished career in Marathi and Hindi cinema.
