Mumbai: On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, organized a free health check-up camp for auto drivers in the Mira-Bhayander region to raise awareness about diabetes — one of the most rapidly growing health concerns in India. The initiative focused on early detection and preventive healthcare among high-risk working groups such as auto and cab drivers, who often neglect their health due to long working hours and irregular lifestyles.
More than 300 auto drivers underwent free tests including blood sugar screening, blood pressure monitoring, and BMI assessments. Shockingly, around 60 to 70 drivers were found to have high blood sugar levels, and most were unaware that they were diabetic or pre-diabetic. This alarming trend reflects the urgent need for regular screening and better awareness among India’s workforce.
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), India currently has over 100 million diabetic patients and an additional 130 million pre-diabetic individuals. Nearly 30–40% of diabetics remain undiagnosed until complications such as kidney disease, heart issues, nerve damage, or vision problems emerge. The rise in diabetes is largely attributed to sedentary habits, poor dietary choices, obesity, and stress.
Speaking about the findings, Dr. Jinendra Jain, Consultant Internal Medicine and Diabetologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said,“Diabetes is a silent epidemic that can damage multiple organs if left untreated. The most concerning aspect is that many people discover it only when complications have already set in. Regular health check-ups, timely diagnosis, and disciplined lifestyle changes are key to controlling diabetes. Awareness and prevention should be our top priorities.”
Through such community outreach initiatives, Wockhardt Hospitals continues its commitment to promoting health awareness, early detection, and preventive care to combat the rising diabetes crisis in India.
