From Our Foreign desk
In a dramatic escalation of the fight against transnational organized crime, U.S. authorities on July 7, 2026, unleashed Operation Hard Ball — a meticulously orchestrated, multi-year investigation that shattered threc e powerful India-based criminal syndicates operating with impunity across continents.
The high-stakes operation, publicly revealed by the Department of Justice through the unsealing of three major indictments and a sweeping single-day raid, has resulted in charges against 37 individuals and the arrest of 24 suspects in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
Timeline of a Relentless Pursuit
The investigation intensified after the brazen June 18, 2023, assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia—a killing U.S. prosecutors now directly tie to one of the syndicates. A follow-up November 2023 shooting targeting an Indian actor in Vancouver added urgency to the probe.
From March 2024 through July 2025, agents documented the Lawrence Bishnoi enterprise brazenly stealing more than 520 kilograms of cocaine from rival cartels in Los Angeles. A pivotal breakthrough occurred in November 2024 with the interception of 49 kilograms of cocaine in Redlands, California.
By late 2025, investigators had penetrated encrypted channels, exposing extortion demands of up to $5 million from Southern California victims between December 2025 and January 2026. The global takedown culminated on July 7, 2026, with over 50 simultaneous raids.
Prison-Based Command and Bloody Reach
At the heart of the syndicate stands Lawrence Bishnoi, the 33-year-old gangster who allegedly masterminded murders, drug trafficking, and extortion from his Indian prison cell using smuggled encrypted devices. Alongside lieutenant Satinderjeet Singh (Goldy Brar), Bishnoi is accused of ordering Nijjar’s assassination.
The networks, including those linked to Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Ravinder Singh Dhanda, allegedly ran sophisticated operations involving cross-border cocaine smuggling via commercial trucks, massive extortion rackets, and violent turf wars.
Major Hauls and Lingering Threats
Authorities seized roughly 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, methamphetamine, firearms, and cash. Eleven arrests were made in California alone, though 10 fugitives—including Goldy Brar, for whom a $50,000 reward has been offered—remain at large.
“Today’s coordinated operation strikes at the heart of three brutal transnational organizations that have terrorized families and communities,” said Patrick Grandy, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
The case sheds new light on the evolving threat of prison-directed global crime syndicates and carries implications for diplomatic relations, even as officials emphasize the focus remains on criminal enterprises rather than state actors.
Federal prosecutions are now underway, marking what authorities describe as one of the most significant actions against India-linked organized crime in recent memory.
