HNGIL Lights Up New Furnace at Bahadurgarh, Doubles Capacity with Rs 280 crore Investment

Bahadurgarh: Hindusthan National Glass & Industries Ltd (HNGIL), a Madhvani-Turner Group company, is investing Rs 280 crore to expand its Bahadurgarh plant in Haryana, doubling capacity from 300 tonnes per day to 600 tonnes per day. A ceremony to light up a new furnace was held at the plant on Friday. The project was completed within the timeline set for it.

The investment comprises Rs 180 crore in capital expenditure and Rs 100 crore in operating expenditure over the next three years. The expansion is expected to create substantial new employment, raise the plant’s contribution to the company’s future revenues and strengthen HNGIL’s manufacturing footprint in North India.

The investment was announced in August, when a delegation led by Chairman Shrai Madhvani met Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and briefed him on the expansion plans. The discussions covered collaboration with the state government under the Make in India and Make in Haryana initiatives.

Spread across around 50 acres, Bahadurgarh is one of the company’s key manufacturing sites in the region. HNGIL has seven plants across the country, the others being at Rishra near Kolkata, Rishikesh, Neemrana, Naidupeta, Nashik and Puducherry.

“We lit up Furnace 4 on the date we had committed to, and that is down to the people at Bahadurgarh. This plant matters a great deal to our plans in North India, and the expansion is meant to take it from 300 to 600 tonnes a day. But a bigger furnace does not help us much if the glass coming out of it is not right every single time. I told the heads of departments that quality has to be checked at every step, because our customers will judge us on that,” said Kumar Krishnan, Managing Director, HNGIL.

The Bahadurgarh investment is part of HNGIL’s revival and expansion programme following its acquisition by Independent Sugar Corporation Limited (INSCO), backed by the Madhvani-Turner Group, through the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code process. The group also aims to invite global companies across the glass value chain to invest and manufacture in India, and to build partnerships with leading international glass companies.

The group was founded in 1914 by Muljibhai Madhvani and has a global manufacturing footprint. It has outlined an ambition to invest Rs 10,000 crore in India over five years, with HNGIL central to its manufacturing strategy. Its India plans were discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a meeting with senior group leadership in June 2025.

HNGIL was established in 1946 and set up India’s first fully automated glass manufacturing plant. It is one of the country’s leading container glass makers, with facilities across India and a growing presence in international markets.
