India is emerging as a hub of traditional medicines in the world, business: Ayush Minister Sonowal

Guwahati: The Indian traditional system of medicines is playing a vital role in the healthcare sector, and people are accepting them globally.

This was stated by Union Minister of AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal while inaugurating the first B2B Global Conference & Expo on Traditional Medicine under Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Guwahati today. He said the popularity of ayurveda and other traditional medicines is growing due to their potential to treat various diseases and provide ample health benefits. Mr. Sonowal said that India has made the best use of its available natural resources to provide healthcare to people as well as achieve the goal of universal healthcare. India is part of 17 mega bio-diverse countries in the world and it has 45 thousand identified plant species. He added that the government will promote the traditional system of medicine without harming the ecosystem. Mr. Sonowal said that India was emerging as a hub of traditional medicines in the world, with its growing business that had touched the mark of 22 billion US dollars.

Speaking at the event, Minister of State for AYUSH and Women & Child Development Dr. Mahendrabhai Munjpara said that India had a long history of using traditional medicine system, and it aimed to bridge the gap in the healthcare system using traditional medicines.

Addressing the event, Maldives Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Safiyya Mohamed Saeed said the use of traditional medicines has grown exponentially as most countries are using these medicines extensively.

More than 150 delegates from 13 member countries are attending the event, and several SCO member countries are participating virtually
