Murder attempt on Tripura CM, three arrested

GUWAHATI : Police have arrested three youths from affluent families for attempting to murder Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. Police Officials said this on Saturday. West Tripura District Police Chief Manik Lal Das said, three persons have been arrested for attempting to murder Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. Deb had narrowly escaped on Thursday evening when a speeding car broke through his security cordon. One of his security personnel was injured in the accident. Police said on Saturday that chief minister Deb Shyama Prasad had gone for a walk near his official residence in Mukherjee Lane on Thursday evening.

Three occupants of the car entered their security cordon during that time. As the car passed Deb, he sped aside. One of his security personnel sustained minor injuries in the incident. The CM’s security squad tried to stop the car but did not get caught. According to police, three persons were arrested from Kerchaumuhani in the city. His car has also been seized. The three accused were produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate PP Pal on Friday from where they were sent to jail on 14 days remand. Assistant Public Prosecutor Bidyut Sutradhar said that the three accused are above 20 years of age and their intentions are yet to be ascertained. Police will try to ascertain their intention in the interrogation. The police official said the incident took place during the Covid night curfew and the three youths not only violated curfew rules but also illegally broke six police barricades. He also attacked a policeman who tried to stop the three youths who were under the influence of alcohol.The trio was booked on various charges including speeding, obstructing the duty of government employees, deliberate injuring government employees and attemptto murder the Tripura CM.

 Police have now seized the car and their mobile phones and are conducting raids at their houses and other places. Police said the youths tried to escape and the police immediately chased the Bolero car but were finally arrested late on Thursday night. Three youths – Shubham Saha (27), an engineer and work as a business developer in a private company, Aman Saha (25), a BBA degree holder and Garik Ghosh (24), are graduates in an unemployed arts faculty. These three youths belong to a very well-to-do family.
