Guwahathi: Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was cremated at Navagraha Crematorium here on Thursday with full state honours. The mortal remains of the former chief minister were given by his son Gaurav Gogoi amidst the gun salute and band tunes by the Assam police. At the time of the mouth, Gaurav was wearing traditional chelang Sadar (shawl) and dhoti and had masks on the mouth. Before giving the mouth of pride, Gogoi’s wife Dolly, daughter Chandima, daughter Elizabeth and other family members laid sandalwood sticks on the pyre. Tarun Gogoi, a three-time chief minister of Assam, two-time union minister and six-time Lok Sabha member, passed away on Monday at the age of 84 years.
He was suffering from health complications after the Kovid-19. Tears swept through the eyes of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s mortal remains as the 3-time chief minister, who was taken to a massive procession from Srimanta Shankardeva Kalakshetra to Navagraha Crematorium in Panbari area of Guwahati on Thursday afternoon. The mortal remains of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi were taken to his official residence in the colony of ministers in Dispur earlier today. From the colony of ministers, he was taken to Rukminigaon Church on G.S Road. After the completion of a prayer service at Rukminigaon Church in the city, the procession sailed towards B. Boruah Road and Zu district areas. Gogoi’s body was taken to zoo Road Namghar and then the funeral procession continued on Chandmari and Gnb Road. It then left for prayer at the Burra Mosque in Anbari.
The funeral of the former chief minister was held in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and thousands of others. The cremation ceremony was also attended by Assam Congress President Repun Bora, state BJP president Ranjit Kumar Das, ministers, MPs, MLAs, politicians, government officials, leaders of various organizations, well-wishers and family members.
