WMCC meeting: India, China agree to earnestly implement five-point consensus

New Delhi: India and China today agreed to earnestly implement the five-point consensus reached at the Moscow meeting between the two foreign ministers. The agreement emerged at  the 19th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination (WMCC) of India-China Border Affairs which was held in virtual mode.

A statement issued by Chinese foreign ministry said, the two sides also evaluated the results of the sixth round of commander-level talks and agreed to hold the seventh round of commander-level talks as soon as possible, and jointly maintain peace in the border area.

Indian side was led by Joint secretary in East Asia Division of Ministry of External Affairs, Navin Srivastava and Chinese side was led by Hong Liang, Director General for Boundary and Ocean Affairs of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting is significant in the wake of 5-point consensus reached in Moscow by the two Foreign Ministers. The two sides had agreed to resolve outstanding issues on ground and to ease the situation along the border.

This is the first WMCC meet since the foreign ministers of the two countries met in Moscow on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization earlier this month in which both sides agreed for disengagement to ease the tension.

WMCC is an institutional mechanism for consultation and coordination for the management of India – China border areas. During this meet, both sides exchange views on strengthening communication including on areas such as border security personnel of the two sides.
