84-Year-Old Woman Walks Again Within 48 Hours of Spine Surgery After Serious Spinal Fracture

Mumbai: In an encouraging example of advanced spine care, an 84-year-old woman regained the ability to stand and walk with support within just 48 hours of undergoing spine surgery at Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Borivali East, part of Apex Group of Hospitals, Mumbai.

The patient was admitted with severe mid-back pain, accompanied by tingling and unusual sensations in both legs. Initial X-rays revealed a fracture in the T12 vertebra, a bone in the lower part of the chest region of the spine. An MRI scan confirmed the fracture and showed that the damaged bone was putting pressure on the space surrounding the spinal cord and nerves.

Considering her age, severe pain and symptoms affecting both legs, doctors recommended surgery to stabilise the damaged part of the spine and relieve pressure on the nerves. The procedure aimed to support the fractured bone, prevent further complications and help restore mobility.

Despite being 84 years old, the patient made encouraging progress following surgery. Within two days, she was able to stand and walk with support under medical supervision, marking an important step towards regaining her independence.

Dr. Kunal Singh (Synapse Spine), Consultant Spine Surgeon at Apex Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, said, “Age alone should not determine whether a patient can benefit from surgery. Every case needs to be assessed carefully, considering the patient’s overall health, the severity of the injury and the potential benefits of treatment. In this case, our focus was to stabilise the fractured bone, relieve pressure on the nerves and help the patient regain mobility safely. Her ability to stand and walk with support within 48 hours is an encouraging outcome and reinforces the importance of timely medical intervention.”

The case highlights the importance of seeking prompt medical attention for severe back pain, tingling or changes in sensation in the legs, particularly among elderly people. Early diagnosis can help doctors identify serious spinal problems and recommend appropriate treatment.

The patient’s early recovery at Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Borivali East, highlights how careful assessment, advanced surgical techniques and guided rehabilitation can help elderly patients work towards better mobility and independence.

Dr. Kunal Singh emphasised that recovery varies from patient to patient, and treatment decisions must be based on individual medical needs, overall health and the potential benefits and risks of surgery. The successful early recovery reinforces the importance of specialised spine care and a personalised approach to treatment, helping elderly patients take meaningful steps towards improved mobility and quality of life.
