GUWAHATI :The BJP is gearing up for the Rajya Sabha seats in Assam and Madhya Pradesh. Candidates for bypolls from these seats have been announced by the party. While the BJP has declared Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as its candidate from Assam, Minister of State from Madhya Pradesh Dr. Al. Murugan has been fielded.
The ministers who have been nominated by the BJP for the Rajya Sabha seat were recently inducted into PM Modi’s Council of Ministers. Both elections are necessary within six months to remain in Parliament. An official statement from BJP Assam Pradesh said, the BJP government has announced the nomination of Union Minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister of State L Murugan for the October 4 Rajya Sabha bypoll. While Sonowal, who is the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, will be the candidate for the seat vacated from Assam.
With this, Murugan will be the party’s candidate for the vacancy in Madhya Pradesh. Both leaders are needed to be elected to the Rajya Sabha to continue their current roles in the government. In Assam, bypolls had to be held after BJP member Biswajit Daimari resigned from the Upper House. Daimari is now the Speaker of the Assembly in Assam. Five of the six Rajya Sabha seats fell vacant following the resignation of members of West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. The Assam Pradesh BJP said Union Minister Sarbananda will win unopposed as the opposition in the Assam Assembly is very weak. Talking to media after being declared a candidate for rajya sabha from Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “I thank all senior BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah. They thought i was worthy of it. In the coming days, I will work with all sincerity in the national interest.
