byteXL’s National Hackathon Draws 4000 Students Across India; Strong Participation from Tier2/3 Cities

Hyderabad : byteXL, a technology and AI skilling company focused on bridging the gap between engineering education and industry requirements, has announced the 2026 edition of its flagship hackathon, HacXLerate, recording 4,000 participant registrations across 800+ teams from 40 colleges in 10 states. With approximately 78% of participating colleges located in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and towns, the hackathon is expanding access to industry-oriented problem-solving experiences beyond India’s major technology hubs.

Designed to move students beyond theoretical learning and conventional coding exercises, HacXLerate challenges participants to build functional technology solutions to real-world problems defined in collaboration with industry partners. The 2026 edition has seen a significant increase in participation compared with the previous edition, which brought together over 1,000 participants across 220 teams from more than 30 colleges.

The model is particularly relevant to students from regional engineering ecosystems, who may not always have the same access to industry-facing technology challenges as students in major technology hubs. With participation spanning a substantial Tier-2/Tier-3 college base, HacXLerate provides a platform for students to demonstrate applied technical capabilities in a competitive, industry-oriented environment.

A key feature of this year’s edition is the involvement of industry partners in framing the problem statements. KPMG in India has collaborated on the Smart Campus Analytics: Predict, Optimize & Improve Student Success challenge, bringing an industry perspective to the application of data and AI in addressing student outcomes. Other challenges include an AI Content Creator Marketplace and a Digital Risk Protection Platform, developed with Kampus.vc, and an AI-Powered Personal Health Copilot, developed with Altrix Labs. As part of the hackathon’s focus on connecting student innovation with career opportunities, Kampus.vc announced interest in offering internship and placement opportunities to the top-performing teams.

The industry-led format places the emphasis on applying technology to a defined problem, rather than developing projects solely as academic exercises. Participants are expected to build and deploy functional solutions and submit their code repositories. Solutions are evaluated on functionality, problem understanding, technical execution, innovation, usability and their potential for real-world application.

Speaking about HacXLerate 2026, Karun Tadepalli, Co-founder and CEO, byteXL said, “India’s engineering talent is not limited by geography, the opportunity lies in how effectively we connect that talent with real industry challenges. With HacXLerate, we are bringing industry partners into the problem-solving process from the outset, giving students the opportunity to work on challenges that demand more than theoretical knowledge. They must understand the problem, make technology choices, build functional solutions and demonstrate their real-world relevance. As AI reshapes the technology landscape, this ability to translate knowledge into execution will be critical to career readiness. The participation we have seen this year, particularly from Tier-2 and Tier-3 institutions, reinforces the need to make such industry-led learning experiences accessible to a wider pool of engineering talent.”

The hackathon follows a multi-stage hybrid format. The first round is conducted through on-ground hackathons at participating colleges, alongside a virtual participation track for eligible students outside the partner-college network. Shortlisted teams progress to a 16-hour buildathon at byteXL’s Hyderabad office, followed by a grand finale featuring the top 7 teams. Round 2 will feature 80 teams comprising more than 380 participants on 24 October 2026, followed by the Grand Finale on 25 October 2026, featuring the top seven teams. The final stage is intended to bring the strongest solutions before an industry jury, creating opportunities for feedback and further engagement with the participating partners.

With a total prize pool of INR 1.75 lakh, HacXLerate combines competitive technology development with practical exposure to industry expectations. Its expanding participation reflects growing student interest in opportunities that bridge academic learning with the ability to build, test and demonstrate solutions to authentic business and technology problems. HacXLerate is byteXL’s effort in strengthening the connection between engineering education and employability, equipping students with the technical capabilities, problem-solving mindset and practical experience required to navigate an evolving technology landscape.
