Dr. Rakesh Nair leads Holy Family Hospital’s launch of state-of-the-art Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery

Mumbai : Holy Family Hospital, Mumbai has launched its state-of-the-art Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery, marking a major milestone in advanced orthopaedic and surgical care. The advanced surgical robotic system was officially launched on Tuesday, 25th August 2026, at 10:00 am on the 6th Floor, Morello Hall, Holy Family Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Bandra, Mumbai.

Knee pain creeps into everything, from walking to the kitchen and climbing a flight of stairs to sitting cross-legged for a meal. Robotic knee replacement is an assisted technology that helps to plan, position and accurately perform knee replacement surgery. It uses precise surgical planning to aid in the accurate placement of the implant, preparation of the bone and alignment of the replacement to the unique anatomy of the knee.

The robotic system was blessed by His Lordship Bishop Stephen Fernandes and formally inaugurated by Municipal Corporator Karen D’Mello and Dr. Rakesh Nair, Chief Robotic Knee Replacement Surgeon at Holy Family Hospital, Bandra. The programme also featured insights into how surgical robotics is transforming joint replacement procedures, with an exclusive clinical and technical briefing, followed by key notes from Dr. Rakesh Nair.

Robotic-assisted knee replacement combines the clinical skills of the surgeon and advanced imaging, surgical planning, and robotic technology. This allows the detailed study of the anatomy of the patient’s knee prior to surgery to establish a personalized surgical plan. This lets the surgeon decide on the right size, position, and alignment of the implant for the patient’s particular knee anatomy. The robotic system provides intraoperative guidance to prepare the bone as planned and assists the surgeon to follow the preoperative plan with a high degree of accuracy. The technique remains surgeon-directed, and clinical judgement is employed at each stage of the operation.

Unlike standard knee replacement, which relies heavily on mechanical instrumentation, surgical measurements and the surgeon’s ability to judge the alignment and placement of the implant, robotic-assisted knee replacement employs advanced imaging and computer planning to provide surgeons with a precise view of a patient’s knee anatomy prior to surgery. The surgical plan can then be performed during surgery with the help of technology-assisted precision. The technique is intended to allow for proper placement of the implant and for the surgeon to make decisions based on patient anatomy, condition and surgical needs.

The procedure starts with careful preoperative planning and imaging of the patient’s knee to understand the individual anatomy and plan the procedure before going into the operating room. The technology can assist with personalised surgical planning, accurate bone preparation, better implant placement and individual alignment based on the patient’s knee anatomy and deformity. Careful surgical planning and preparation can also lead to less disturbance of the surrounding tissues. Depending on the general condition and recovery of the patient, some patients can start moving and rehabilitation soon after surgery. The aim is to combine surgical expertise with robotic technology to create a well-planned, patient-specific knee replacement.
