GLS University Hosts Renowned Designer Duo Shantnu & Nikhil for a Special Edition of ‘Decoded with Dr. Chandni Kapadia’

Ahmedabad : GLS University welcomed celebrated designer duo Shantnu Mehra and Nikhil Mehra, Co-founders and Creative Directors of Shantnu & Nikhil, for a special edition of “Decoded with Dr. Chandni Kapadia.” The session formed an important part of the Faculty of Design orientation, giving students an opportunity to interact with two of India’s most influential creative minds.

The story of Shantnu and Nikhil began with two very different journeys. One brother came from the world of finance, while the other followed his creative instinct into fashion. Together, they built a distinctive label that reimagined Indian tradition through contemporary silhouettes, military detailing, fluidity, craftsmanship and bold experimentation.

In conversation with Dr. Chandni Kapadia, Executive Director, GLS University, the designers reflected on their creative journey, the challenges of building an original brand and the importance of developing a strong individual point of view. The discussion moved beyond garments and glamour to explore originality, courage, business, criticism, collaboration and the freedom to question established design conventions.

A major highlight of the session was the active participation of GLS University’s design students. They interacted directly with the guests, presented their ideas and showcased their creative work. Shantnu and Nikhil appreciated the students’ imagination, originality and willingness to experiment beyond conventional design thinking.

The interaction also highlighted the academic culture of GLS University, where both faculty members and students are encouraged to explore new ideas, challenge traditional mindsets and develop their own creative identity. The designers praised this environment of freedom, curiosity and experimentation.

The session featured engaging segments such as “Trend or Timeless,” “Style Tips for Gen Z,” “Mood Board Round,” “Drape or Drop” and the signature “Decoded” round. Through these conversations, students gained practical insights into creative processes, branding, fashion entrepreneurship, originality in the age of social media and the balance between tradition and innovation.

“For us, building a brand has never meant creating only one label. It has meant developing distinct identities for different audiences while preserving the same creative DNA. Shantnu & Nikhil Couture represents our most refined and expressive design vision, S&N by Shantnu Nikhil brings that language to a younger and more contemporary audience, while Shantnu Nikhil Cricket Club reflects our passion for sport, culture and modern Indian style. Each brand has its own personality, but they are united by one belief—that Indian design can remain rooted in tradition while being bold, youthful and globally relevant.”— Shantnu Mehra

“To every young designer, we would say: do not be afraid to experiment, make mistakes or question what already exists. Innovation begins when you move beyond the comfort of tradition while continuing to respect its roots. People often see the final collection, the runway and the recognition, but they rarely see the years of discipline, failure and constant learning behind it. Success is never built overnight; it comes from believing in your vision, adapting to change and continuing to create even when the journey feels uncertain. The future belongs to those who are willing to think differently, remain curious and keep learning every day.”— Nikhil Mehra

The decoded concluded with a symbolic student showcase centred on an unfinished garment, representing ideas that are still evolving and creative identities that are still being shaped. The moment captured the central message of the session: creativity does not begin with perfection; it begins with curiosity.

Through “Decoded with Dr. Chandni Kapadia,” GLS University once again created a meaningful platform where students could learn directly from accomplished professionals, present their own work and gain the confidence to think beyond traditional boundaries.
