Mumbai / New Delhi : Asserting its position as an emerging name in India’s creative economy, Meghalaya successfully showcased its pioneering digital initiative, ‘Hello Meghalaya’, at the Film Expo India held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Shifting the narrative from merely being a scenic cinematic backdrop to a thriving hub for authentic storytelling, the State’s pavilion drew massive attention across a broad spectrum of attendees. Beyond industry leaders, Bollywood filmmakers, and creative professionals, the showcase also attracted keen interest from tech and AI innovators, alongside delegates from various other sectors eager to explore the State’s expanding digital and creative ecosystem.
The overwhelming response headlined by a visitor’s remark, “Meghalaya is the Gen Z of states”, underscores the success of the State’s youth-centric, modern, and confident approach. The ‘Hello Meghalaya’ stall recorded around 300 visitors on its opening day alone. Several Bollywood directors and actors expressed keen interest in scouting the state not just for its breathtaking terrain, but to actively collaborate with the emerging talent.
The ‘Hello Meghalaya’ stall witnessed high-profile visits and direct industry endorsements from prominent cinema figures. Actor Vindu Dara Singh applauded the State for taking the lead in representing the region on a national platform and stated, “Meghalaya has taken the first step, I promise you that we will be coming and shooting a movie in Meghalaya very soon.” This momentum was further amplified by Nixon D’Cruz, Associate Director of the blockbuster Pushpa, who expressed keen interest in future creative ventures and exploring the State’s talent pool. Echoing this industry enthusiasm, filmmaker Ashwin Nayak commended the State government’s initiative, noting, “The Government of Meghalaya is doing a fantastic job, talent is inborn across all the tribes of Meghalaya.”
Backed by the visionary leadership of Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, ‘Hello Meghalaya’ is a pioneering state-backed OTT platform. It was conceived with a clear objective: to create a sustainable digital ecosystem that empowers the youth, musicians, filmmakers, and content creators of the State.
By providing free access to regional content and backing local creators with a viewership-based revenue model, the State initiative ensures that artists can showcase their talent to a global audience and earn a livelihood from their creative pursuits. Regarding the platform’s broader mission, the Hon’ble Chief Minister has emphasized that the initiative goes beyond merely offering grants or a hosting space; it is fundamentally about nurturing local talent, creating substantial opportunities for the youth, and building a thriving, sustainable creative ecosystem.
Notably, Meghalaya has instituted the progressive Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy 2025 to transform the State into a premier national filming hub under its Vision 2032. The policy provides a framework of incentives, including single-window clearances via the Invest Meghalaya Portal and subsidies of up to ₹1 crore or 25% of production costs, alongside special grants for utilizing local talent, music, and premiering on the ‘Hello Meghalaya’ OTT platform. Demonstrating its impact, the State recently hosted its first policy-backed feature film, Baa Baa Black Sheep, which completed 100% of its shoot in Meghalaya in just 25 days and generated employment for nearly 2,000 local youth.
At Bharat Mandapam, the ‘Hello Meghalaya’ delegation, effectively communicated this paradigm shift. Representing Meghalaya’s culture, artists, and growing creative community before a national audience, the team highlighted that the State is actively redefining its presence in India’s film ecosystem.
Highlighting the multi-dimensional appeal of the State, the showcase extended beyond film to incorporate Meghalaya’s rich heritage. A key highlight of the expo was a fashion showcase featuring indigenous textiles and traditional attire from Meghalaya and the broader North East region.
Through strategic capacity-building initiatives like ‘Hello Meghalaya’, the Government is bridging the gap between local potential and national possibilities. As the state continues to expand its digital footprint, Meghalaya is proving it is not just a beautiful place to film, but a dynamic state with original stories that demand to be seen.
