Kochi: The Central Government has approved the sale of electric wheelchairs manufactured by Ostrich Mobility, an indigenous manufacturer founded by a group of Malayalis, through military canteens at discounts of up to 25 per cent. The initiative aims to support military personnel and their family members with physical disabilities, marking the first such approval for electric wheelchairs in military canteens.
Founded in 2007, Ostrich developed electric wheelchairs tailored to Indian terrain and users’ individual needs. Its innovations include patented split-frame chassis technology for safer movement on uneven roads and an automatic wheelbase adjuster for improved manoeuvrability in confined spaces. The company also pioneered doorstep servicing, offering repairs at users’ homes.
Founded by Venu, Binu, Sreejith, Harsha and Hari, Ostrich began with a prototype built using a Maruti Baleno car’s wiper motor. Today, its wheelchairs are used by over 18,000 people and have featured in films such as Bangalore Days and Wazir. The company’s journey has also attracted attention at Harvard Business School. Its accolades include the SIDBI ET MSME Award and the ET Now Leaders of Tomorrow Award.
The Central Government’s approval marks a significant milestone for Ostrich, recognising its indigenous technology and contribution to accessible mobility.
