Quote on Egg Price Hike by Divya Kumar Gulati, Chairman, CLFMA of India

“The recent increase in egg prices is the result of multiple domestic and global factors converging at the same time. As per CLFMA’s latest prices data (24 July), benchmark egg prices have touched ₹7.40 per egg (₹740 per 100 eggs) in key markets such as Chennai, while major producing centres like Pune and Mumbai are ruling at ₹7.30 per egg. This reflects a firming market driven by seasonal demand, weather-related production challenges, and rising input costs.

The ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia have further added to the pressure by impacting global logistics, freight rates, and the prices of key feed ingredients such as maize and soybean meal, which together account for nearly 70% of the cost of egg production. Higher transportation costs and supply chain uncertainties have also contributed to the recent price movement.

Despite the current price firmness, there is no shortage of eggs in the country. India produces over 140 billion eggs annually and remains the world’s third-largest egg producer. The poultry industry continues to maintain adequate supplies to meet domestic demand. As seasonal conditions improve and global supply chains stabilize, prices are expected to ease. Eggs continue to be one of the most affordable, high-quality sources of protein, and the industry remains committed to ensuring both consumer availability and farmer sustainability.”
