Rosatom has completed equipping the Rooppur NPP (Bangladesh) with power unit control systems

Mosscow : JSC Rosatom Automated Control Systems (JSC RASU, the Automated Control Systems and Electrical Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation) has completed the installation of automated process control systems (APCS) at the first and second power units of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The Rooppur NPP, with two power units equipped with Generation III+ WWER-1200 reactors, is being constructed by JSC Atomstroyexport (JSC ASE, the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation) in the Republic of Bangladesh.

The automated process control systems supplied to the first nuclear power plant in Bangladesh by RASU JSC include software and hardware systems for monitoring, controlling, and ensuring process safety. This includes approximately 20,000 pieces of equipment for 43 systems. They will monitor over 7,000 process parameters, including the stability of the reactor plant.

The “brain” of the NPP power units will utilize an assistant—the Operator Information Support System (OISS), developed by JSC RASU based on a digital twin of the power unit. The system is already integrated and participates in start-up operations at Unit 1, and it will also be installed at Unit 2. It summarizes disparate process information, presenting it in an easy-to-understand format, making operators’ work more convenient and efficient. The OISS analyzes data from 360 process systems, identifies deviations, and provides prompts to the operator, recommending actions from more than 80 instructions, including emergency response ones.

“The Rooppur NPP is not only the largest project of cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Bangladesh, but also our flagship in the use of modern automation and control technologies. This is Rosatom’s first foreign plant to implement the Operator Information Support System. The system increases response times and reduces operating costs. Thanks to this unique Russian development, power unit control room personnel will have a reliable assistant,” noted Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the Rosatom State Corporation.

For Reference : The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), with two VVER-1200 reactors and a total capacity of 2,400 MW, is being built using a Russian design 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in accordance with the general contract dated December 25, 2015. The Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors was selected for Bangladesh’s first NPP. Rosatom’s flagship VVER-1200 reactors have already proven their efficiency and reliability in the operation of reference power units. This is an evolutionary Generation III+ design that fully complies with international safety requirements. Six power units based on these reactors are currently in operation – four in Russia and two in the Republic of Belarus. Active construction of NPPs using Russian technology is underway in Egypt, Hungary, Turkey, and China. Survey work is underway at a site in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the construction of two VVER-1200 units.

The Automated Control Systems and Electrical Engineering Division of the Rosatom State Corporation (ACS and Electrical Engineering, management company – JSC Rosatom Automated Control Systems, RASU) combines industry expertise in industrial automation, instrumentation, and electrical engineering, forming the technological foundation for managing nuclear power and industrial facilities. The division serves as a complete supplier of control, monitoring, and energy distribution systems for nuclear power plants at all stages of the lifecycle, spanning dozens of operating and under-construction power units in Russia and abroad, as well as industrial facilities, solar power plants, and wind farms. The division includes a research institute with its own production facility; a manufacturer of radioisotope instruments; and a market leader in power conversion technology and electric charging infrastructure.

Russia is consistently developing international trade and economic relations, focusing on cooperation with friendly countries. The domestic economy is expanding its export potential, supplying goods, services, and raw materials worldwide. Rosatom and its enterprises are actively participating in this effort.
