Pune: The Director of the one of the most reputed and leading ophthalmology hospitals in India, Dr. Aditya Kelkar from NIO Super Specialty Hospital has recently won the prestigious Rhett Buckler Award for the sixth consecutive year. The event which is organized by the most reputed organization, American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) – bestowed this award to him under the category of best surgical video.
Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Kelkar said, “At NIO Super Specialty Hospital, we are pioneering the future of eye care and treatments that will be accessible and beneficial for our patients. We have conducted several complex surgeries and treated patients with severe trauma and at times rare conditions. We take pride in receiving this recognition as it proves our consistency and capability in treating our patients with the best healthcare facilities in the field of ophthalmology. We shall continue to lead and expand the research and expertise in ophthalmology to new frontiers and standards as well.”
Dr. Kelkar received the award for presenting a complex case of post-traumatic cataract and retinal detachment in a child, who had a ball injury while playing cricket. The child had hidden this injury from his parents which led to delayed diagnosis, by which time the retina had been scarred and fibrosed and a traumatic cataract had developed.
This injury case required a series of four surgeries to achieve partial recovery. What was special about this surgical documentation was that NIO used intra-operative OCT, a digital microscope and ultra widefield retinal imaging to capture each and every detail of the operation – whether it is preoperative, intra operative or post operative.
The Rhett Buckler awards, which are awarded to a select few retinal surgeons from all over the world. Winners are chosen based on meticulous documentation of surgeries, novel surgical techniques used, and the ability to solve complex retinal problems among patients through informative content. More than 90 surgical videos are submitted annually, with over 30 experts judging them across the world.
The ASRS only awards membership only to those who have done specialized training in retinal surgery, making this award even more significant. Thereby, Dr. Kelkar’s award further solidifies NIO’s ongoing commitment towards surgical excellence and innovation in ophthalmology.
