SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Kattankulathur Successfully Manages Rare High-Risk Pregnancy Complicated by Liver Tumour
Chennai : Doctors at SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre successfully managed a rare and extremely high-risk pregnancy complicated by a hepatic tumour, demonstrating the institution’s expertise in multidisciplinary maternal and fetal care.
The patient, a young pregnant woman in her eight months of pregnancy, was referred to SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre with vague abdominal complaints and a liver-tumour approximately 9 -10 cm detected during pregnancy. Detailed evaluation by the specialist team revealed a rare and challenging clinical scenario requiring urgent expert intervention.
The presence of a large hepatic tumour carried a significant risk of spontaneous rupture during pregnancy, which could have resulted in catastrophic bleeding, maternal collapse, and even maternal mortality. In view of this grave risk, an emergency lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) was performed successfully at 30 weeks of gestation under close multidisciplinary supervision. The patient delivered a healthy female baby, was kept under specialized neonatal care.
One week after the surgical delivery, the patient successfully underwent a major liver surgery, Left Lateral Sectionectomy of the liver by the Surgical Gastroenterology team. The patient showed steady postoperative recovery under expert supervision.
