BUZZARDS BAY, MA … Boston-based global athletic leader New Balance Athletics, Inc. and Norwell-based North American environmental leader Clean Harbors join Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) in announcing that they have entered into an agreement to support construction of a new campus wellness resource, which will be named the New Balance Wellness Center at the Clean Harbors Athletic Facility.

The $30M, 18,000-square-foot Center will be located adjacent and connected to the Academy’s main gymnasium, creating a hub for student health, fitness, and well-being.

The project recently received final approval from the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management & Maintenance (DCAMM), which also completed a feasibility study.  DCAMM is currently working with MMA on designer selection for the project.  Study and design will take place through 2027, and construction is expected to take approximately 18 months.  The new Center is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2029.

“New Balance is proud to support Massachusetts Maritime Academy through this new wellness Center that will provide enhanced athletic and well-being opportunities that complement the Academy’s strong academic and skill development programs,” said Jim Davis, New Balance Chairman.

“I am  proud to partner with Massachusetts Maritime Academy on this important investment in student wellness and success,” added Alan S. McKim, Founder and former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Clean Harbors.  “The Academy develops the skilled professionals and leaders who will shape the future of essential industries, and providing modern spaces that promote physical health, resilience, and teamwork is a critical part of that preparation. By supporting the renovation and enhancement of the existing athletic facility alongside the new New Balance Wellness Center, we are helping to create an environment where cadets can thrive both in the classroom and beyond.”

“Our partnership with New Balance and Clean Harbors reflects a shared belief in the power of wellness to shape future leaders,” said Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, USMS, president of Massachusetts Maritime Academy. “The New Balance Wellness Center will provide a contemporary, dynamic environment where cadets can build life-long healthy habits that support their growth into confident, capable maritime professionals.”

The collaboration also includes an annual $5,000 scholarship opportunity starting in the Fall of 2027 for a child of a New Balance associate who is attending the Academy.
