SRIPERUMBUDUR, TAMIL NADU : Reinforcing its commitment to the communities around its manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Samsung India is helping 200 women from nearby villages build sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative, launched in May, is transforming lives in Sriperumbudur, where 100 women in each village are receiving two months of hands-on tailoring training. The programme combines practical stitching skills with basic entrepreneurship guidance, enabling participants to turn their new capabilities into a source of income. Upon completing the course, every participant receives a sewing machine, allowing her to immediately begin working from home or establish a small tailoring enterprise within her community.
Located near Samsung’s manufacturing operations in Sriperumbudur, the programme reflects the company’s commitment to creating opportunities that extend beyond the factory gates by strengthening livelihoods in neighboring communities.
For many women, the programme represents far more than vocational training—it offers a pathway to financial independence, self-confidence and long-term economic security.
“Many women joined the programme with little or no formal tailoring experience. Today, they are confidently stitching garments, taking customer orders and thinking about how to build a steady income. Seeing their confidence grow has been the most rewarding part of this journey,” said K. Kumari, tailoring trainer for the programme in Santhavallur.
Among the participants is A. Divya from Santhavallur, who hopes to contribute to her family’s income through tailoring. “I always wanted to learn a skill that would help me support my family. This training has given me the confidence to start working from home, and receiving a sewing machine means I can begin immediately,” she said.
For R. Nandhini from Sirumangadu, the programme has opened the door to a more independent future. “This training has shown me that I can build a livelihood with my own skills. With the sewing machine I received, I hope to start taking tailoring orders in my village, contribute to my household income and encourage other women to become financially independent,” she said.
As one of the largest manufacturers in Tamil Nadu, Samsung believes its contribution extends beyond the factory gates. While the company is helping women in communities around its Sriperumbudur plant build sustainable livelihoods, it is also empowering young students with STEM learning through its DigiArivu programme in Ranipet and Kanchipuram.
Across the state, the company is also empowering school and college students through Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, developing future technology talent through Samsung Innovation Campus, and equipping young people with industry-ready retail and technical service skills through Samsung DOST. Together, these initiatives reinforce Samsung’s long-term commitment to Tamil Nadu’s economic and social development.
