Sources confirm that Poonawalla submitted his resignation to senior BJP leaders, citing personal reasons. Almost simultaneously, he updated his X (formerly Twitter) profile, removing all references to the BJP and his position as national spokesperson.
His revised bio now reads: “Religion Islam, Culture Hindu, Ideology Bhartiya. Author: GST Ki Yatra; Lifelong follower of PM Narendra Modi.” He shared a screenshot of the updated profile with the simple caption “My updated bio.” The change effectively severs the public association with the party while reaffirming his personal loyalty to the Prime Minister.
Poonawalla, 38, had emerged as one of the BJP’s sharpest television faces after joining the party in 2017. A lawyer by training, he began his political journey with the Congress but quit following a public confrontation over the party’s internal presidential election process, which he alleged was skewed in favour of Rahul Gandhi.
