Mumbai: As Mumbai gets ready to celebrate the festive spirit of Onam, the Andheri Malayali Samajam (Regd.) is bringing a spectacular slice of Kerala to one of Mumbai’s busiest public spaces.
A giant and colourful Pookalam (floral carpet) will be created at Metro 1, Andheri Metro Station, from August 25 to 27, 2026, as part of the Samajam’s Onam celebrations.
Andheri Metro Station is among the busiest Metro stations in Mumbai, with more than one lakh commuters passing through the station every day. The grand floral installation is therefore expected to offer thousands of Mumbaikars and visitors an opportunity to witness one of Kerala’s most cherished cultural traditions.
The Pookalam, traditionally created with fresh flowers during the ten-day Onam celebrations, is much more than a decorative floral arrangement. It represents Kerala’s cultural heritage, community spirit, harmony and the collective joy associated with Onam.
Through this initiative, Andheri Malayali Samajam seeks to take the essence of Kerala beyond the Malayali community and share it with people from different linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
For many non-Malayali commuters, the Pookalam will offer a glimpse into the traditions, folklore and cultural memory associated with Onam and Kerala. For Malayalis living away from their homeland, it will also be a nostalgic reminder of the festive mornings, flowers, family gatherings and community celebrations of their childhood.
“Onam is a festival that transcends language, religion, region and social boundaries. By bringing a traditional Pookalam to one of Mumbai’s busiest public spaces, we want to share the warmth and inclusiveness of Kerala with the entire city,” said representatives of Andheri Malayali Samajam.
The Samajam believes that cultural initiatives of this nature can become bridges between communities. The Pookalam at Andheri Metro Station is envisaged not merely as an Onam decoration, but as a celebration of India’s cultural diversity and the spirit of togetherness.
The three-day floral spectacle will also provide an opportunity for commuters to pause amid the fast pace of Mumbai life and experience the colours, fragrance and cultural symbolism of Kerala.
Andheri Malayali Samajam invites Mumbaikars, Malayalis and visitors from across the city to experience the Pookalam and celebrate the message of Onam — togetherness, harmony and shared happiness.
