Innoviti Launches AI-Driven Backup Platform to Prevent UPI Transaction Failures and Costly Card Switches

Bengaluru:  Innoviti Technologies, a leading industry-specialised payment solutions provider, has launched an AI‑driven UPI Acquirer Backup Platform designed to detect early signs of UPI network instability and reroute transaction traffic in microseconds—avoiding costly automatic switches to credit cards at checkout.

The system targets a hidden but significant expense for organised retailers. When a UPI payment fails, customers often default immediately to paying by card—shifting the transaction from a near‑zero‑cost UPI rail to a credit‑card payment that incurs a merchant discount rate (MDR) of 90–150 basis points.

Until now, retailers had only reactive options after a failure: staff manually switching acquirers on EDC terminals, or simply accepting the customer’s card. Cohort data shows that of every 100 UPI failures, about 10 convert to a card transaction within 90 seconds—too fast for manual intervention.

How It Works

The platform uses unsupervised machine‑learning models to continuously score each connected acquirer against its own historical response patterns. When an acquirer’s behaviour drifts from its baseline, the system automatically reroutes UPI Dynamic QR traffic to a healthier acquirer—before the QR code is even presented to the customer.

This pre‑emptive intervention requires no change to merchant systems or daily reconciliation processes, and the consumer does not need to rescan the QR.

Impact and Pilot Results

In a pilot with a large hypermarket cohort, monthly UPI failure rates of 9–12.5% (at an average ticket size of ₹3,000) were creating an additional annual MDR impact of approximately ₹2.6 crore for a 100‑store chain.

After deploying the backup platform, failure rates dropped by 90%, saving the merchant over ₹2 crore annually.

Executive Perspective

“UPI is now the default checkout choice for most Indian consumers, but every failed transaction risks shifting the payment to a higher‑cost card,” said Innoviti’s leadership. “Retailers have long dealt with this reactively—manually switching acquirers after the fact, by which time the customer has often already reached for a card. Our platform intervenes before the failure reaches the counter, using machine learning to continuously monitor acquirer health and reroute traffic seconds ahead. This small infrastructure shift has an outsized impact on retail margins, and it points to the next phase of payments: creating value at the exact moment a transaction happens, not just processing it.”
