Vedanta Oil & Gas plants 3.5 lakh saplings across 700 hectares in Barmer to restore ecological balance
Barmer: Vedanta Oil and Gas Limited (BSE: 544782 | NSE: VOGL), India’s leading private oil and gas producer, has completed the plantation of 3.5 lakh saplings covering 700 Ha of degraded forest land in Barmer, Rajasthan. The plantation initiative reinforces the company’s commitment to ecological restoration in Barmer and is expected to generate long-term environmental benefits.
During the recent monsoon season, VOGL conducted a large-scale afforestation and ecological restoration initiative, aimed at enhancing green cover and strengthening long-term environmental resilience across the Barmer district, where the company has been operating for over two decades.
This initiative is part of Vedanta Oil and Gas’ broader ESG commitment to plant 2 million trees by 2030. It underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability and biodiversity conservation as it advances towards its Net Zero carbon goals.
Increasing the region’s green cover is particularly challenging due to the arid landscape of western Rajasthan, limited rainfall, extreme temperatures, and fragile ecosystems. Against these challenging conditions, Vedanta’s sustained efforts to expand green cover marks a significant step towards ecological restoration.
The entire plantation programme has been developed using a scientifically planned and region-specific approach, with a strong emphasis on ecological suitability and long-term sustainability. The 3.5 lakh saplings planted in two phases, include Khejri, Neem, Kumath, Jaal, Ber, Rohida, Sheesham, Jungle Jalebi, Ardu, Moringa, and Guggal. The mix of indigenous and climate-resilient species were selected to complement the region’s natural ecosystem, enhance biodiversity, and support local flora and fauna.
As these plantations mature, they are expected to enhance the ecological value of the landscape by supporting biodiversity, improving soil stability, reducing land degradation, increasing carbon sequestration, and contributing to healthier environmental conditions across the region.
Over three decades, Cairn has remained at the forefront of sustainability, driving the transformation through climate action, digital innovation and responsible operations, in line with India’s socio-economic and environmental priorities.
Over the past five years, Cairn has reduced its emissions by more than 410,000 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to the carbon sequestration capacity of 20.5 million trees. The company has also achieved a 65% reduction in flaring volumes of potential gas during the same period.
