Police station in Kohima gets ISO certification

 Dimapur: A police station in Nagaland added another feather to state’s police cap by becoming the first police station/government office in the state to have been awarded International Standard Organisation (ISO) 9001 certification.

“Kohima North Police Station has become the first police station/ government office in Nagaland to receive the ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management system,” Kohima superintendent of police Manoj Kumar A. told media persons in his office chamber today.

Established as the first police station under the erstwhile Naga Hills district by the British regime in 1933, the police station has been awarded the ISO certification in recognition of its meeting the specified parameters of quality management system on policing and related scope of activities which include maintenance of public peace, law and order, prevention, detection and investigation of crime and criminal activities, emergency response, VIP security and prevention of human trafficking.

The police station is located in the heart of Kohima town and headed by an inspector rank officer in-charge and 88 other ranks.

The process of certification was completed within a span of 30 days. The process was completed through online application, process, upgradation, documentation and online auditing.

Kumar congratulated sub divisional police officer (North) M. Yambemo Humtsoe and officer in-charge of North Police Station Chubaonen on being able to complete the process for ISO certification.

He said the Kohima police had initiated the process of certification by upgrading the existing facilities and adding additional elements with the sole objective to improve the quality of public service and make the police station more people friendly and accessible.

To meet the specified parameters, the police station has streamlined the process of character/passport verifications and the system of filing and record keeping. Besides other measures, the infrastructure of the police station were upgraded and disposal of various complaints have been made time bound.

The police station has a reception desk, para legal volunteers help desk, separate interrogation-cum-investigation room, separate space for visitors, clean drinking water facility and several other visitor-friendly amenities.

Kumar the initiative was started with an objective to provide quality services to the people and make it quality control in service delivery in future.

Kumar said with this certification, the police station will be able to provide better quality services to the public. It will also help the police station keep a check on quality services that the police department would be rendering in future, he added.

He also spoke on the upcoming manual and guidelines for police personnel and training on maintenance of standard in service delivery.

Kumar hoped the upgradation would positively result in better service delivery to the public and uplift the level of proficiency in police administration. He added that the ISO certification has helped ensure that the police personnel routinely evaluate their working and implement remedial measures, as and when required.

ISO 9001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system. Organisations use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. It is the most popular standard in the ISO 9000 series and the only standard in the series to which organisations can certify.
