Guwahati : Assam Police has arrested six persons in connection with a boat accident between Nimati Ghat and Majuli in Assam, killing two people and injuring several others and leaving one person still missing. The Jorhat police have registered a criminal case on the orders of Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. Confirming the development, Jorhat Superintendent of Police Ankur Jain said, “We have arrested six persons involved in the movement of the unfortunate boat on charges of causing death due to negligence.

The investigation is underway. The arrested persons have been identified as Jogen Das, Dhanbar Das, Biju Kumar Das, Jayant Dutta, Binod Barua and Babul Niyog.According to a new statement by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, there were 92 passengers on board the boat “Ma Kamala”, out of which 89 were rescued, two died and one person is still missing. The incident took place on Wednesday when a private boat from Nimati Ghat to Majuli collided with “MB Tipkai” a boat operated by the State IWT department coming from the island of River Ma Kamala. The accident claimed the 30-year-old life of a female teacher that the body of another victim Rajgarh High School teacher Indreshwar Bora was recovered from Bhasa Island near Umatumuni Island in 100 km downstream Bishwanath on Saturday. Meanwhile, search and rescue operation is on for the last missing person by a team of NDRF and SDRF.
