Sensex jumps 418 points; Nifty climbs 119 points

Mumbai: The Sensex and the Nifty today posted gains of more than half a percent. Both key domestic stock indices rose amid positive cues from other Asian share markets.

The Sensex reclaimed the 60,000 mark while the Nifty regained 17,900 level.

The Sensex jumped 418 points, or 0.7 percent, to finish at 60,260. The Nifty also climbed 119 points, or 0.67 percent, to end at 17,944.

In the broader market at the BSE, the Mid-Cap index rose 0.64 percent and the Small-Cap index climbed 0.53 percent.

In the Sensex pack, 23 companies posted gains while seven logged losses. Bajaj Finserv was the top gainer as it climbed 5.7 percent followed by Bajaj Finance which gained 3.3 percent. Bharti Airtel gained 2.6 percent and Tech Mahindra rose two and half percent.

On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra lost 1.1 percent, UltraTech Cement fell 0.7 percent and Maruti ended 0.6 percent down. 

In sectoral indicies at BSE, 17 sectors gained while two logged losses. Telecom sector gained 1.8  percent while Tech and Consumer Durables, both climbed 1.1 percent each. IT index rose one percent.

On the other side, Auto sector fell 0.3 percent and Consumer Durables sector index slipped 0.1 percent.

The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 2,017 companies gained, while 1,405 fell. Shares of 134 companies remained unchanged.
