Lucknow:  The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) organized a high-level roundtable discussion on the theme “Current Challenges of Adult Immunization and Way Forward” in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The event brought together leading medical professionals, policymakers, public health experts, and representatives from both government and private sectors to address the critical need for strengthening adult immunization in India, with a special focus on influenza.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Hasan Yaqoob, Co-Chair, ASSOCHAM Uttar Pradesh State Development Council, emphasized that immunization remains one of the most effective public health measures. He highlighted that adult immunization, particularly against influenza, continues to face challenges, including vaccine hesitancy, inequitable access, and the need to strengthen awareness, policy frameworks, and healthcare delivery systems. He further noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgency of prioritizing preventive healthcare—not only to safeguard lives but also to reduce healthcare costs and productivity losses.

Dr. Ajay Gupta, State Immunization Officer, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh, stressed that adult immunization plays a crucial role in protecting vulnerable populations against vaccine-preventable diseases like influenza.

Dr. Shalu Gupta, Joint Director MCH (P), Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh, added that protecting adults through immunization is essential for building a healthier society. Vaccines against diseases such as influenza safeguard individuals while also reducing transmission within communities, making adult vaccination a key step toward comprehensive preventive healthcare.

Pushpak Khare, Regional Director – Commercial Development, Abbott India, highlighted that India faces a dual burden of non-communicable and infectious diseases, including influenza, which increases the risk of complications, hospitalizations, and extended ICU stays. He emphasized that vaccination is not just for children—adults also need protection, especially those at higher risk, such as older adults and individuals with chronic conditions or weakened immunity.

Prof. D. Himanshu, Head, Infectious Diseases Department, King George’s Medical University (KGMU), observed that adult vaccination is a cornerstone of infectious disease prevention. Influenza and other vaccine-preventable illnesses can have serious complications, particularly among high-risk groups, making the promotion of adult immunization vital to reducing morbidity and protecting the wider community.

The roundtable saw active participation from the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, government medical colleges, renowned doctors, and representatives from the industry.

The discussion concluded with a consensus on the urgent need to increase awareness, expand access to vaccination programs, and implement a coordinated strategy to bridge the adult immunization gap in India.
