Bhubaneswar:  Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar successfully treated a 53-year-old male patient, Mr. Ramakanta Patra from Jajpur Road, who was admitted with severe left-sided hip pain stemming from long-standing bilateral avascular necrosis of the hip joint. The patient underwent a Total Hip Replacement using the advanced Direct Anterior Approach, a minimally invasive technique adopted to address his worsening mobility and debilitating pain. The procedure became essential as the patient also lived with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, hypothyroidism and chronic kidney disease, all of which placed him at moderate surgical risk.

Mr. Patra had previously undergone a hip replacement on the opposite side through the traditional posterior approach at another facility, which resulted in a slow and painful recovery. When his left hip pain intensified to a point where walking became extremely difficult, he sought expert care at Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar. After a thorough assessment, the medical team of Dr. Sunil Kumar Dash, Senior Consultant & Director – Orthopaedics concluded that the Direct Anterior Approach would offer the safest and most effective outcome, particularly considering his metabolic health conditions. This advanced technique is recognized for preserving major muscles, reducing the need for extensive tissue disruption and minimizing blood loss benefits that lead to shorter operative time and significantly faster recovery, especially crucial for patients with additional medical complications. The surgery was completed smoothly, with reduced intraoperative blood loss and a shorter duration in the operating theatre.

The post-operative phase clearly reflected the benefits of this modern technique. The patient experienced less pain, was able to stand and begin mobilization the following day and showed such steady improvement that he was discharged within three days. His follow-up assessment revealed exceptional progress, as he walked freely without support—an outcome far superior to what he had experienced after his previous hip replacement performed using the conventional method.

On the successful outcome, Dr. Sunil Kumar Dash, Senior Consultant & Director – Orthopaedics, Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar said, “The Direct Anterior Approach has transformed how we manage complex hip cases. It allows for precise implant placement while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues. For patients with multiple health issues, reducing surgical stress becomes critical, and this technique consistently delivers faster, safer and functionally superior recovery.”

This case highlights the commitment to delivering advanced, patient-focused orthopedic care through modern surgical techniques and clinical expertise. It reflects a continued dedication to improving recovery outcomes, enhancing mobility and ensuring safer, more effective treatment options for individuals with complex joint conditions.
