New Delhi: India scripted a landmark moment for the global physiotherapy fraternity as more than 10,000 physiotherapy professionals and delegates came together under one roof at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, New Delhi, creating an unprecedented gathering that showcased the scale, strength and growing international stature of Indian physiotherapy. The historic congregation took place during the World Physiotherapy Asia Western Pacific (WPAWP) Conference 2026, organised by the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) on September 26–27. Physiotherapists, clinicians, academicians, researchers, educators and healthcare professionals from India and 32 countries participated in the two-day global gathering, transforming Yashobhoomi into a major international platform for clinical knowledge, scientific research, innovation, education and the future of movement and rehabilitation.

In recognition of the extraordinary scale of the gathering, the London Book of World Records presented a World Record Certificate, acknowledging the congregation of more than 10,000 physiotherapy professionals under one roof. The achievement marks a defining moment for Indian physiotherapy and reflects the remarkable evolution of the profession from a predominantly rehabilitation-focused discipline to a broader healthcare profession contributing to prevention, fitness, healthy ageing, disability prevention, functional independence and quality of life. The gathering also assumed additional significance as it coincided with the 70-year journey of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists, providing a historic backdrop to an achievement that brought the Indian physiotherapy fraternity into the global spotlight.

One of the defining moments of the historic conference was the presence of Hon. Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Rekha Gupta, who addressed the massive gathering of physiotherapy professionals at Yashobhoomi. Recognising the contribution of physiotherapists to healthcare and recovery, the Chief Minister described them as “Healing Hands”, highlighting their role in helping patients regain movement, function and independence following surgeries, accidents, injuries and major health conditions. Smt. Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi, said: “It is a proud moment for Delhi to host such a remarkable gathering of more than 10,000 physiotherapy professionals from India and across the world. Physiotherapists are truly the ‘Healing Hands’ of healthcare, helping people regain mobility, confidence and independence. This historic gathering at Yashobhoomi reflects the growing importance of physiotherapy and the contribution of its professionals to a healthier society.” The Chief Minister’s recognition of physiotherapists as “Healing Hands” resonated strongly with thousands of professionals present at the venue and became one of the most memorable moments of WPAWP 2026.

The significance of the gathering becomes even greater against the backdrop of the physical-activity challenge highlighted during the conference. Data presented from WHO reports showed that 31% of adults globally were insufficiently active in 2022, while estimated physical inactivity among Indian adults aged 18 years and above stood at 49.4%, and among Indian adolescents aged 11–17 years it was estimated at 74%. These figures underline the need to look beyond treatment after illness or injury and strengthen prevention, movement and functional health across the population. The conference presented physiotherapy as a profession capable of connecting prevention, function, rehabilitation and participation, with a vision of making movement easier to start, safer to sustain and accessible across age, ability, income and geography.

Prof. Dr. Sanjiv K. Jha, President, Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP), said: “This world record is a historic recognition of the collective strength of Indian physiotherapy. More than 10,000 professionals coming together in Delhi demonstrates how far our profession has travelled and the tremendous unity within our fraternity. But the significance of this moment goes beyond the number. Physiotherapy today is increasingly connected with prevention, fitness, healthy ageing, disability prevention and lifelong functional health. This gathering demonstrates that India has the professional strength, scientific capability and collective vision to contribute meaningfully to the global future of physiotherapy.”

A major theme emerging from WPAWP 2026 was the need to redefine fitness through movement, function and participation, rather than viewing exercise only as a structured activity. The conference highlighted the role physiotherapists can play across the prevention–rehabilitation continuum, from building physical capacity and reducing health risks to restoring function, enabling participation and helping people remain active throughout life. The discussions also focused on taking physiotherapy beyond hospitals and clinics into schools, workplaces, primary care and communities, with greater emphasis on accessible and affordable opportunities for movement.
