6 miners from Assam killed in Meghalaya coal mine

GUWAHATI : An illegal coal mine collapsed in Meghalaya’s East Jayantia district and six assam workers are feared dead. According to the report, the incident took place in Umplang area of the district. “SP Silchar has received information that 6 people from Assam are trapped in a coal mine in EJ Hills,” Meghalaya police said in a tweet. Cachar SP Vaibhav Nimbolkar Chandrakant said he came to know about the incident. “We have received information that the bodies of five or seven workers were buried 500 feet below the mine shaft,” he said.

Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said the Cachar police have been asked to coordinate with their East Jayantia Hills counterpart to investigate the incident. In January this year, at least six coal mine workers from Assam died in a coal mine in East Jayantia Hills district. Six coal miners had fallen to a depth of 150 feet after the machine they were using to dig the tunnel collapsed.
