Epstein Files Nail Puri: Still Untouched in Modi’s Cabinet!

In the wake of the unsealed Jeffrey Epstein files by the US Department of Justice, a storm has erupted around Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, exposing uncomfortable truths about his associations with the convicted sex offender. The documents reveal a web of communications that contradict Puri’s claims of limited, professional interactions, raising serious questions about his judgment, honesty, and fitness to hold public office. As the Modi government prides itself on a “Transparent and Accountable Administration,” its silence on this matter only amplifies suspicions of a cover-up. Puri’s continued presence in the cabinet is not just untenable—it’s a betrayal of public trust that demands his immediate resignation.

The allegations, spearheaded by the Congress party, paint a damning picture. Between 2014 and 2017, Puri allegedly exchanged 62 emails with Epstein—32 sent by Puri and 30 by Epstein—and held 14 meetings. Specific dates from 2014 alone include June 5, 6, 8, and 9; September 19, 23, and 24; and October 9 and 10. These interactions began shortly after Narendra Modi assumed office, when Puri, a former diplomat who joined the BJP in 2014, was ostensibly promoting India’s economic interests. Yet, the content of these exchanges goes beyond mere networking. Emails show Puri discussing India’s digital growth, the “Make in India” campaign, and even facilitating a visa for Epstein’s lady aide. One particularly eyebrow-raising message from Puri references Epstein’s “exotic island,” urging him to “have fun” and expressing eagerness to meet upon his return. While Puri has dismissed this as casual banter, it reeks of familiarity unbecoming of a public figure associating with a man convicted in 2008 for procuring a minor for prostitution.

Puri’s defense has been riddled with inconsistencies, fuelling accusations of outright lying. He insists he met Epstein only “three or four times” over eight years, all in a professional capacity tied to his role at the International Peace Institute (IPI) in New York. However, the files document at least three meetings at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse—on February 4, 2015; January 6, 2016; and May 19, 2017—along with efforts to connect Puri with Silicon Valley moguls like LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. In one email, Hoffman praises Epstein’s “exquisite taste in people” after an introduction facilitated by the disgraced financier. Puri’s claim of ignorance about Epstein’s crimes strains credulity; Epstein’s 2008 conviction was public knowledge, and by 2014, his notoriety as a sexual predator was well-established. Why would a seasoned diplomat share sensitive details about the Digital India initiative with such a figure? Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera rightly questions: In what capacity was Puri divulging government policies to a convicted offender?

This cozy relationship stands in stark contrast to how other global figures handled their Epstein ties. Across the world, Epstein’s associations have led to resignations and public reckonings. For instance, MIT Media Lab director Joichi Ito stepped down in 2019 after revelations of financial links to Epstein. Norwegian diplomat Terje Rød-Larsen, Puri’s former boss at IPI, resigned in 2020 amid scrutiny over Epstein donations. Even high-profile names like Bill Gates have faced intense backlash, with his marriage reportedly strained by Epstein meetings. Prince Andrew of the UK was stripped of royal duties in 2019 due to his Epstein connections. These cases underscore a global standard: proximity to Epstein’s orbit demands accountability, especially for those in power. Yet, in India, Puri remains ensconced in the cabinet, overseeing critical sectors like petroleum and natural gas. Why the exception? Is it because exposing Puri risks tarnishing the BJP’s image, or worse, revealing deeper entanglements?

The Modi government’s tight-lipped response exacerbates the suspicion. Despite Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary allegations and Congress’s calls for a probe, there has been no independent investigation or even a ministerial clarification beyond Puri’s defensive interviews. This stonewalling contradicts the BJP’s mantra of transparency. Remember, this is the administration that touts “Na Khaunga, Na Khane Doonga” (I won’t indulge in corruption, nor let others). Allowing Puri to cling to his post while questions swirl about potential national security lapses—such as sharing policy details with a man linked to espionage and trafficking—undermines that pledge. If Puri was indeed a “private citizen” during initial contacts, as he claims, why did interactions continue post-2017, when he joined the cabinet? And why intervene in visa matters for Epstein’s lady staff, potentially compromising India’s diplomatic integrity?

The delay in addressing this scandal will only mount embarrassment for the Modi government. Public discourse on platforms like X is ablaze with demands for Puri’s ouster, with users highlighting the hypocrisy of a regime that swiftly targets opposition figures but shields its own. Continuing to harbour Puri discredits the entire administration, suggesting that political loyalty trumps ethical governance. A legitimate probe is essential—not just to clear the air, but to ensure no undue influence was exerted on Indian policy through Epstein’s network.

In essence, Hardeep Singh Puri cannot wash his hands of this mess, nor can the government. His lies about the extent of meetings, his cosy connections, and his reckless sharing of national plans with a known predator demand least resignation from the cabinet. Until cleared by an impartial inquiry, Puri should step aside. Anything less mocks the “Transparent and Accountable Administration” the Modi government claims to embody. The longer Puri stays, the deeper the stain on India’s global reputation. It’s time for accountability—not excuses.
