Bengaluru : A Bengaluru student, who had undergone dialysis for two years and underwent a kidney transplant in 2021, with his mother as the donor, has achieved a remarkable feat by scoring 589 marks out of 600 in his II PUC exams in 2026.
At just 17 years, Dhanush M Poojary has attained this amazing feat even after fighting the battle against a kidney problem and getting himself a kidney transplant when he was 12 years old.
The boy was diagnosed with shrunken kidneys in early 2020. At a very young age, the boy went through hospitalisations and dialysis procedures. The transplant surgery provided him with a new lease of life and gave him the determination to concentrate on academics once again. Despite the physical and emotional challenges associated with chronic illness, frequent hospital visits, and recovery from major surgery, he remained committed to his studies and emerged as a top performer.
Dhanush’s family, originally from Mangalore, remembers the crucial guidance they received from Dr. Vidyashankar P during his treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru, when he was just eight years old and undergoing dialysis.
Dhanush now dreams of doing his higher studies and establishing himself as a Chartered Accountant.
Manjunath Poojary, father of Dhanush, who manages a tea shop on the periphery of Bengaluru, was deeply thankful for this timely medical intervention that transformed the life of his son. “We are really pleased with his progress in academics, and his health has improved greatly since then,” he said.
Recalling the case, Dr Vidyashankar P, who is currently Director and Lead Consultant – Nephrology at KIMS Hospital, Mahadevapura, Bengaluru, said, “The child came to me in early 2020 with severely shrunken kidneys, and I advised the family that a transplant was the only probable option. He remained on dialysis for nearly two years. Fortunately, his mother was a compatible donor and selflessly came forward for the transplant, ultimately saving his life. I am elated to see the child living a normal life and doing well for himself.”
Dhanush continues to receive comprehensive follow-up care at KIMS Hospital, Mahadevapura, to ensure his long-term health and recovery.
He further added, “Through prompt action and adequate post-transplant care, with family encouragement, the patient can lead a healthy lifestyle again, especially for young children who can attend school, and fulfil their dreams. Follow-up consultations and following medical instructions are key factors for future success.”
This case is not only an inspirational story but also highlights the critical importance of early diagnosis, the availability of transplant services, and organ donation. The process of living organ donations, particularly from members within a family, continues to play a vital role in saving lives.
